Default Meltdown Since Last Update?

The update came down this morning, and ever since I can't run the game for more than 5 minute without my graphics card overheating....

Geforce 7600GS, been installed about 2 months, absolutely no problems with running GW at all till this morning.

Any tips? Be a bit fed up if I have to miss the wintersday event because of this, and I don't think my Macbook will love me if I try and run it on that...

[edit] Meh... seems the fan on the card's not spinning at all. Gah, another one bites the dust.

I hope you have tried to clean out the PC, but I think you have tried that already. Do you still have the warranty on the card itself? Because I am still milking a 5900, and it still runs GW without too much of a hitch.

Mmm yeh, it's not too bad in there as we've had to replace quite a few bits and bobs recently, so it's been cleaned quite a lot. I suspect that it may be my joy at finishing work for Christmas, and playing GW a little toooo much that's caused it.

We've replaced the fan on the card (hooray for aftermarket gear) and it's stopped overheating for now... but I think I'm gonna give the treasure hunting a rest for a few days...

Same problem here. Since the patch, what appear to be two thermal reboots. GeForce 6600, Intel Dual Core, been running GW without a hitch for about three months. Then today two thermal reboots. Computer is new. I checked for dust anyway, even though the area is pretty dust free. Still all shiny and new inside, no dust, vents open. Room temperature about 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Virus scan by up to date Norton reveals no problems.

I hate to say this butit may be time to turn the eye candy down a bit. Since the atest batch of updates I have had to do that also. I run an ATI X1900 XTXwhich should have no problems, but I have had to tun the eye candy down some to get the thermals under control. As far as my CPU goes it is water cooled so no problems there.

I don't understand why people are complaing about the slow fps, game or graphics lag or whatever. Come on guys do you people ever take a look at the graphic options? I guess not.

Let me tell you I have a freaking Geforce 2 TI which is a card that aint for sale anymore and more then 6 years old. It doesn't support directx 9, shaders or post processing effects, and you ever heard me complaining about a overheated gfx card? No, so what to do?

First of all make sure you updated your gfx card drivers which basicly fix old problem that could case fps drops in newer games. Ati card are really famouse about these problems with drivers and OpenGL (which is being used for games)

When done, open up the game and tweak your GuildWars, like low shader detail, less world detail, turn off post process effects when you have a card that doesn't do it too well and don't turn up your anti-aliase too high which really fries your gfx card. Now that's it, in my case I even tweaked the sound in game which give me a little fps more. I run the game on my Geforce 2 TI at 20/50 fps and in big towns around 15/25 fps. Just play around with the graphic settings. 1gb of MB Ram is also really handy, and don't run more then 1 program else then GW durning gaming (I run normally winamp for music) because that drops your fps in some cases.

Last time a friend of mine bought a new gfx card, you know why? he installed the game, the game set everything high and he didn't change it, so he though, wth my gfx card is outdated. Not really because if he had changed just the anti aliase or turn down the shaders, it was perfect. :/ I know even people who bought a complete new pc because they thought there pc couldn't handle it, but instead they played the game on maxed graphics and yes that will always drop your fps. Games there graphics are always made that way that only the newest stuff gfx, processors or another technology can run the game with 60fps and maxed out graphics, and yes some gfx card can't do that, so then you have to tweak the game to run it smooth but with less.

On my laptop I have an Ati 600 mobile, and that one runs it all maxed out and jeee that looks really eyecandy, but it can handle the stuff without problems.

I'm not. I was merely wondering if a) anyone else had had issues that only arose after the last update (addition of Candysmiths and snowball pve) and b) asking for tips.

If you read my OP this was a new problem, since solved by getting an aftermarket fan and putting it on my card.. so yeh, I think I know a little bit about what to do. The fact that it happened so suddenly made me wonder about the update, especially when it's been the dogs danglies for ages. Like I said, probably overdid it while I was off work and burnt out the fan, after looking around the net a bit it looks pretty common for people to get aftermarket fans for their cards, it certainly works better than the flimsy PoS that the Nvidia card has on it.

Do I ever look at the graphics options? Hell yeh. For the record, I don't max everything out. I care more about being able to play than it looking pretty.

Oh, don't use ATI myself. They might be good for gaming but they're a load of rubbish for running Maya, which I have to use all day.

I've actually had the same problem, as the OP.
Before this last update, I would get anywhere from 40-50 fps, and still be able to run Winamp, MSN messenger in the backgroud with absolutely no problem.

After the update, I'm lucky to get 6-10 fps, and nothing can be running in the background, or the game is unplayable.
