Default Login = Crash?...

... but, game startup =/= crash?

I have posted this before, but i went through a number of steps that randomnly fixed the problem. But it intermittently returns...

In fact, this problem is COMPLETELY random. I can ALWAYS start Guild Wars without trouble. However, every so often when i login, as soon as i do, the game completely crashes. Sometimes its such a hard crash i can't even Cntrl + Alt + Del.

I have done pretty much everything under teh sun to try and fix this and prevent it from happening. But as soon as i think i am ok, been playing/loging on just fine for a few days, BAM it happens. Then a few days later it is fixed...

I have defragged, preloaded all GW files (-image), disabled nearly all background running programs, run constant checks for spyway, bugs, wurms, loaded latest graphics drivers, rolled back to older graphic drivers, reinstalled/redownloaded all game files, logged on using different users (still crashes game), and sent support ticket to Anet (which ultimatly never and didn't help).

So has ANYONE else experienced this? EVER? Specifically the game crashing only at actual login. Or is this some mysterious thing i will have to live with (until i get a new PC)?

cheers.

FFS!!

EVERYTHING I OWN IS BREAKING DOWN ON ME!!!!
Laptop power supply now works only 10% of the time. Car battery just died. Car radio antenna motor just died. And...

for the last 2 days. EVERY GOD DAMN TIME I start GW it comes up with this "Repairing Data Archive" screen, which takes from 10-20 minutes. Today i logged in for the first time without that screen, but when my character loaded up, they were stuck in this repeating animation of running then jumping a bit, then would flash back to stand location and start the animation again. I noticed the Storage person at my guild was was doing the same. It was SOOO creepy!

WHY am i having progressivly WORSE and WORSE problems with GW? Did they just break my game copy with this last update? Just 5 days ago i had defragged, done full system scan for any malicious software, and cleaned out my hardware of all secondary programs i didn't need/want. 2 days following that GW was working like a dream. Then all of a sudden, the issue that was first mentioned in this thread occured... AND NOW THIS!!!

GOOD GAWD IM CURSED!!
I am desperate now, if i can no longer play GW reliably i am gonna hit uninstall. I have been playing GW for 18 months, 16 of which i had no issues; EVER. In the last 2 months, i worked on troubleshooting this game more then i have spent time troubleshooting anything else PC related. Honestly.

Im sad. Cheers?

After running GW on my system mostly problem-free since June 05, I've had problems similar to those in your first post for a coupla weeks now. Random complete freezes of the graphics on the screen (ctrl-alt-delete etc not working, no mouse movement) happened anywhere from during play to the login screen, then sometimes during PC bootup. Other programs ran ok, the problem was mostly with GW. I tried a HD defrag, didn't work. Tried formatting the HD & a complete reinstall, that helped for about a day then the problems returned. I thought about heat probs so I took the side off my mini tower & gasped (see 'choked') at 22 months worth of dust since I put the machine together *embarrassment*, stripped & cleaned the components, cleaned the RAM & its slots & reassembled: worked better for a day or so then the problems came back. Now it completely freezes at the login screen. I've tried checking the HD, downloading latest motherboard and ATI graphics drivers, reinstalling the latest directx and they didn't work. I don't know much about PCs so I have a friend coming over this afternoon to take a look at it and test all the possible causes. If we figure it out then I'll let you know what worked. Personally, after reading these threads, I'm beginning to suspect the GW programming in the recent updates, but there are still many possibilities.

I had a similiar problem a couple months back. Half the hench were stuck in a loop animation, in every outpost, and many NPC's were doing the same thing. Everyone thought I was on crack when I asked about it. Virtually every start of the game resulted in the archive repair. Turns out my hard drive had some bad sectors. I had to replace the drive. I never had any issues before that, or since.

Check your hard drive manufactures website for diagnostic tools. They may be able to repair, or remap the drive to avoid using the bad sectors.

^^ that my friends is some good advice. I would definetly suggest that you do some diags on your HD and possible even some memory tests. What files systems are you guys using? FAT32 or NTFS? there are some file size limitations on a FAT32....I think the GW.dat is close to or past 4gb now and FAT32 has some serious problems with files that are over 4gig.

Another couple things that you can do is check your pc for ad-ware and spy-ware as theycan ause all sorts of problems. There are several good programs out there some free. What I use is Ad-Aware from Lavasoft, Spy-Bot search and destroy, and a couple others. just use the first 2 and see what they come up with. Also the bad sectors in the other part of this post can happen even with a new Hard drive. Use your antivirus and whatever tools that you can get ahold of, and hopefully things will work out.
