files are updates created after the completion of the CDs they are new content and game changes...

if you have dialup you CAN play the game... But it will take time to download all the updates, and will be somewhat laggier than those with broadband.

Mod Edit: Removed non-helpful content and added in more relevant commentary. If someone says that they can't get broadband, making a post stating "Get broadband as it's cheap" is not at all helpful and does nothing to resolve the OP's question/issue.

well, how about this, ive been doin some research on this, and i guess once you download the updates, they're permanent, unless you remove the game from your hardrive, so could someone who has high speed, and has all the updates, send me their GW file? Not like account and everything, just the DAT file

You do know that the rate at which you can download someone elses .dat file would take longer than downloading the missing parts from the official server. It would be over 3GB which over dial-up has a good chance of file corruption.

yes they can or atleast i believe so but remember that the perfect GW.dat is like 2.7 gig...... So my suggestion would be to...to add the -image tag to the end of your shortcut and let the game update overnight..(ask you mom if its ok to stay connected) then come morning you should be fine. so if you go to properties of your GW shortcut it should look something like this in the target box..

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"

either make a copy and rename it to GW update or add this line to your current shortcut -image...should look like this

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image

(remember to be outside of the "" also if you don't create a second shortcut remember to remove the -image tag after it is updated)

IF you installed the game from the NF cd you should have less files to download than if u installed from Prophecies CD.

Hope this helps...

Yeah, I wouldn't even think about trying that.

I did see somewhere about copying the file onto something else and installing the copy onto the other computer. But, I mean, the .dat file is HUGE. What portable thing could hold that?
Oh, or if one's a laptop couldn't you just hook them up and do the transfer that way?
(I don't know too much about comps and my curiosity has perked up.)

Perhaps a responce from a fellow dial-up user will help, such as myself.
Yes, when you start playing the game and are loading your character and all that, you are downloading every file that arenanet has made through updates, starting the games, changes, etc. We had to leave GW Running for a few hours for it to download all of it, and you might have to download more files when you go to a new area/city for the first time, but after that its smooth sailing. I'm on dial up and guild wars runs perfectly for me, no lag or anything, we even have graphics and stuff all the way up. Hope this helps!

OK. GW will play just fine on dial up! I know, I play on it all the time. (Not everyone can get broadband!!)Downloading all the data will be the hard hitter. Best thing to do is to have someone else who plays put it on a flash drive, mini-hard drive, DVD etc. Then copy it to your GW folder, and you will be set. Or take your PC to a friends house that has broadband and use the -image switch to download the stuff, on a good broadband connection it will only take a few hours max.

If you don't know anyone who would let you do that or whatever, I would be willing to put it on a DVD for you.
