Default memory could not be read error

Hi.
Ive been getting this error when trying to install Guild Wars for months.

heres 3 attempts I made today,and the results;

Is this a common problem? I understand its not a guild wars issue but a problem elsewhere,but I cant find much information on it.
Ive read that it may have somethign to do with memory voltage settings,but not 100% sure on what steps to take.
Perhaps I have some faulty hardware?
I run with 1.5GB ram,x1650 pro 256mb card,3.2ghz P4,XP home. Just had a full service done on the PC by a friend which showed no apparent problems.
i dont have any other errors with games other than guildwars.

any ideas?

thanks

"Install Guild Wars"...

From the CD? Maybe the CD is corrupted.

Download the offcial client from www.guildwars.com

This will install the latest GW client, but you'll need to download about 3 GB before you have the entire client. ( I think about 1 gb is needed for actual play, you'll download the rest on the way;however, this is not recommended. Create a new shortcut, add -image to the target location, and let it download for the night. Example: "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image )

I agree, try a different installation of guild wars, and also I would run a memtest to make sure your RAM is working properly.

I downloaded it from the link and *shock* it worked! so I selected a character to use,and got into the part where I was downloading other data..and then it just shut itself down,no warning,just disappeared from the taskbar.
now it wont start up at all from the icon. so i was in briefly.

the other thing you mention;
Create a new shortcut, add -image to the target location, and let it download for the night. Example: "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image )
I dont totally understand,you mean copy a new shortcut and rename it -image?

thanks

If you right-click on the shortcut and select properties, then where it says

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"

change to

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image

click apply and ok, then double-click the shortcut to run, when it's done downloading all the files it will automatically exit. After it's done, right click the shortcut again and click properties, and change it back to look like

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"

Sounds like your memory might be faulty. Did your friend run a memory test? If not, download Memtest86+ from here: http://www.memtest.org/
