Default Geforce 6800 freezing GW

Has anyone else experienced a total computer lock-up while playing GW with a Geforce 6800? If so, what did you do to correct the problem. I've tried updating and rolling back drivers, I've tried tweaking with rivatuner.... Thanks.

Which 6800? There were three models, The 6800 Ultra was the best. However, have you checked the temp on the video card? You cooling fan(s) may have failed or are dirty. I have to clean mine about once every three months.

It's a GS, my case fans are pointed in its general direction, and even with the case off it continues to freeze (most recently and often on the new login screen). My PSU is either 400 or 450 so I seriously doubt it is the problem. I also tried playing without my second hard drive and no CD drives and still...

I just updated to drivers released yesterday and it froze in less than a second at the login screen.

I used an ati 9600 before this and never had a problem.

If i may chime in here for an opinion on the Geforce graphic cards:

I currently have an ATI Radeon x1600 pro 512 mb ddr2 card.
I am looking to upgrade for something that is dx10 compatible and I am looking at the GEforce 8600GTS OC with 256mb gddr3 card.

In comparison of the two on memory size (512mb ddr2 to 256mb gddr3) am I losing out performance wise?
Should I save/wait for a 512mb gddr3 card?
Should I just keep my 512mb ddr2 card and just upgrade my 2gig(1gig stick and two 512 sticks) of system memory for 3 gigs (three 1 gig sticks)?

Not wanting to overtake the thread from the OP, but since the topic is about Geforce 6800 cards, I hope this could be answered.

i have the freezing issue as well on the 6800 - game sort of darkens and i have no access to the game. This is a video error as i can alt tab (no change in vid) and can access my desktop, but my game is stuck visually on the screen. If i can get around it and restart gw and video drops to 600X480 and colors are basic. restarting the driver in services.msc restores normal video and it will work fine afterward. As for a true fix, no clue... just updated drivers hopefully that worx, if not imma be getting a new comp soon anyway...

Mine totally freezes the entire computer and does not allow me to enter keystrokes. I also upgraded drivers and it seems the 1680x1050 resolution is too wide for my display. (if I move my mouse to the right side my picture scrolls over, and vice versa). Any recommendations for this one? And the freezing is fairly ridiculous with the new login screen, nothing has made it lock up nearly as much (and nothing other than GW seems to do it...)

I have a GF6800GT and last year it continually froze up on GW in particular. Sure, I had other games that looked better but it froze on Guild Wars. Why? Complete graphics card overheat. It was happening for weeks and weeks, then I decided to check the core temperature. 140C... - _-

It was clogged up with dust so I took it back to the shop to have it cleaned and a new cooler installed, which solved the problem.

Guild Wars somehow makes your graphics card overheat like a mofo, moreso than any other next generation game would, so check your temperature. I think that's the problem here.
