Default Network problem (and a question I have always wondered about :))

Hello!
First off, you had better get settled down as you could be in for a long post .

So anyway, the main reason I came here is because my friend, who I always use to play Guild Wars with is coming to stay for awhile. The problem is though I have been unable to play Guild wars at all since the GWEN update afew weeks ago.

See whenever try run guild wars with the image thing or not(on gaming pcs in LAN), it starts fine at the install place at around 40kbs (normal) then suddenly it drops fast...all the way to 3, sometimes 1 or even 0. It is the same on both the Gaming pc's( see below for specs). Checking the connection speed on the server one, it works at pefectly normal speeds ( same speed it starts at in GW installer)

From this I would of guessed its a LAN problem...but I seem to have no problem with other games, and I can move 300mb+ files though the shared folder as quickly as normal.
I will start from the beginning in hopes it will help alittle .
Ok see I own four computers, as follows.
This one,

It is the main Server(bolded for reference later).
It has,
32mb pro-savage built in video chip
1024 mb ram
AMD athlon XP 2400+, 2.00 GHZ
Win XP SP2.

Game PC 1
AMD 64 2.21ghz
Geforce 6600GT 128mb
1024 MB Ram
WIN XP SP2

Game PC 2
AMD 64 X2 (not sure on mhz as its turned off )
Geforce 7900GT 256mb
2GB ram
WIn xp SP2

Other
666Mhz
Geforce 5200 128mb (old pci type)
300 something MB ram
WIN 98SE

I have two connections, LAN and internet called
Local area connection
VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
It is 100mpbs
These are the options selected (don't know what they mean)
Client for Microsoft Networks
QoS packet Scheduler
File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Local area connection 2
This is the internet connection which connects to the server computer
It is ADSL 1mbs (says as fast as the line goes)
Client for Microsoft Networks
QoS packet scheduler
File and printer sharing from MS networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

I have tried using the defrag suggestion in the sticky, and also fiddling round with those settings but no luck yet. If anyone has any suggestions I would very much appriciate it.

Hehe, not done yet ,if it's ok
I thought while I am at it, I might as well post some other things I often wonder about.

See the server pc has the following software protection installed
Nortan anti virus 2007,
Spybot search and destroy 1.4
Windows defender
Hijackthis_v2

Now I have all ways wondered, do these programs protect the other three pcs on my LAN?
They all have no protection on them at all ( in hopes of speeding things up). I never have Lan on though when I am surfing the web, its just for gaming.
Do you think the other three pcs are pretty safe doing this or would you suggest getting protection for all them also?

Thats about it, thanks so much to anyone who has read this far and if anyone should have the time I would really appricate any help on any of these issues.
Thanks again,
Jo

I'm pretty sure they only protect the PC they're installed on.

As for the updating thingy, do an -image on a pc that does download quickly, then transfer the gw.dat to all the other pc's. I have no clue if those LAN pc's will be able to connect to the server properly then though.

hi Yanman.be,
Thanks for the reply, however sadly the server does not have GW on it (not enough gpu) and all the others suffer from the problem only with Guild wars, it seems.

Hi again,
Sorry to bump this up again so soon, just I would really be thankful of any help or suggestions. Spent all yesterday (Sunday) trying to figure it out with no luck.

I reinstalled the LAN and firewalls afew times, but sadly it seemed to have no effect. However I did not know about any of the options under Advanced settings like Services (DHCP UPnP type things), ICMP and other settings like that.

So, does anyone please know of a guide which details setting up a LAN where the only thing the clients can get are the shared folder and games allowed through a fire wall (no Internet explorer are others) and which details about all those extra options?

About my forming question again, do you think the other PC's on the LAN will be safe without any protection, since I only connect it for games?

Anyway, any help would probably mean so much as its looking like at the moment, I may not be able to play my favourite game again.

Thanks for reading thus far into my problem, regardless if you are able to help.
