Default Why is my FPS lower than it should be.

I have an emachines T2682, got it about 3 years ago. ive replaced the motherboard with an ASUS, 2.6ghz celeron processor(options of 400, 533, and 800mhz FSB), the old RAM with 2 gigs of DDR400, GeForce nVidia FX5500 PCI from PNY technologies(about the time i got the computer), and ive added another case fan.

Ever since i've had Guild Wars with these mods, I always seem to have an avg of 8-14 FPS when im moving, but when im standing still, it jumps up to 25-35 FPS, with an occasional 50 FPS. Whether on minimal graphics or high detail everything on, the difference in FPS is only 3-5. So on high detail, I run about 6-10 moving, and 15-22ish standing still.

What bothers me the most, is that my friends, all have stock computers, just as old as mine, nothing added on, and they're running much smoother than I am. Usually I see them at 20-30 FPS moving, and 25-70 FPS standing still, it really pisses me off. I've read that celeron's are pretty crappy CPU's for gaming, and i know i have PLENTY of RAM. Every game seems to run like this for me. Is it the CPU, or the GPU, my thought is that it's the CPU.

Please post LOGICAL suggestions.

In my opinion the problem is located in the graphics card. Such a small difference between low and high detail is kinda weird. Do you have similar problems with other games?

yeah, Halo does it too, and so does unreal, and Flight sim, pretty much everything does, but im still concerned on the fact that celerons suck at gaming. I mean, atm im saving for an 8800 GT, only $100 to go.

any thoughts help

this might sound stupid to you but the thing to check might be your power supply. you might be running max output and your video card among other things may be not getting enough juice. this happened to me and i got a better power supply and it almost tripled my fps and my computer makes a lot less noise.

that is a great thought, ive read emachines are sissy when it comes to power supply. i'll definitely check into that.

Still would like more suggestions, power supply is good though.

You will need a new PSU to run that 8800. A bog standard PSU won't cut it. Best option is to stick it out for now, and just buy a new computer when you have the cash.

You will need a new one if you intend on playing GW2 anyway.

Dude i had the same problem, i had a Celeron and a FX5500.

FPS-
Max: 50
Min: 8
Ave: 22 (PVE), 17 (GVG)

Put your resolution up as high as it goes. Then see what happens. Strange as it sounds i did that on mine and it made the game run smoother.
Other than that its a combo of the Celeron CPU and the PCI slot FX5500. Your friends probably have P4s and PCI-E slots.
Save your money to build a complete new modern system. Or if like me, you dont wanna do that, find the best CPU your mobo can take and get a slightly better (but not over the top) 3D card.

Try lower the detail setting, turn off the shadow, uncheck the Vsync if it on, lower water refection detail and so. It may help, but that 5500 is a bit to old school for all the new flashy stuff in GW.

So, put up the resolution as high as it'll go in guildwars, at what graphics detail? I'll definitely try it.

About the better GPU, i've already found that the nVidia 7300 GT AGP is the best my MOBO can handle, so i need about $20 more till i go buy that.

I would personally say tough it out and save up a bit more and overhaul your motherboard, CPU, and vidcard. >_> I understand the whole budget deal, really I do, but getting an AGP card won't buy you much more time till you need to upgrade yet again...in my opinion it would be better to tweak what you can to make it playable, and save up to get something that will last you for awhile (PCI-E motherboard, probably a dual-core CPU, doesn't have to be high-end, just something more recent, relatively.)

Probably not what you wanted to hear, and believe me, I know what it's like, took me ages to save up for my current box, but it was worth living on a PIII 800mhz with only 384mb of RAM on 98SE with a GeForce 4 MX420 till about 2 years ago...sucked hard till I managed to afford to get what I have now, and let me tell you, patience pays off. Tweak what you can, look online for optimization tips, proper driver (newest isn't always the best), etc. to make things playable. I think you'll be alot happier if you save a bit longer and upgrade your whole rig rather than a stopgap measure like getting just a new vidcard.

That's my two cents.

Yeah, well I thank everyone for your input. My birthday is coming up in september, and i've talked to my dad about building a new computer, and he said it was fine. So i've been favoriting pages the last few hours.

So far i'm looking to get ->
Core 2 Quad core Q6700, which i'll OC
nVidia 8800GTX's running sLi
some spiffy 20" flatscreen(havent decided yet)
i've already got 2 gigs of RAM to put in it
300GB hard drive
nVidia 680i LT sLi MOBO
and then obviously some cooling.

watts mean nothing

what brand and model?

this is the one place you cannot afford to cut corners.

i have been swapping procs/ram since the early 90`s and building my own for over 9 years now.

cheap high watt rateing is trouble

You cannot just limp out on some no brand cheap $20 PSU! You do that and you'll watch your $1500+ investment just go BOOM!

Get some good and well known brand such as Antec, OCZ, Enermax and Tagan.
