Unhappy Crashing since GW: EotN trial key was added

ASUS A8N-SLi
AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+
2GB Mushkin PC3200
7900GS 512MB PCI-e
Audigy 2 Sound card
Windows XP

Firstly, let me just say that Guild Wars has never once crashed on me since I installed it way back in '05! It's always worked flawlessly on the various systems since release.

Now, ever since I added the key for the GW:EotN weekend trial Guild Wars has been crashing! No blue screens, no little boxes to report the error, in fact I get nothing but the game freezing and the sound at the time of the crash looping.

This first happened about 30 mins into playing the trial, just outside of Gunnar's Hold. Yesterday, it occurred whilst I was Vanquishing 'Perdition Rock', and today no more than 10 mins ago it happened whilst I was trying for the 'Vizunah quare' masters award. Sometimes I can play for hours and it won't crash.

I have to hit the PC's reset button to exit the game. It's freezing the entire PC! Nothing else crashes at all, just Guild Wars which has never crashed on me before the trial key was added.

Any ideas, because support are useless and just keep asking me to send in the non-existent error report! Now I work in IT support, and for the life of me I can't figure this out. It has to be something to do with the trial key, has that is the only thing added to the game before the crashes started.

But that's mainly dealing with people running the Intel based graphics adapters. I'm running a Nvidia 7900GS 512MB PCI-e card, so I'm thinking that there's something more to do with this problem than just what card/chipset you're running because normally I'm getting back a flawless 100+ fps at max settings.

The thing is, the lock-ups I'm having can't be replicated. They're just happening at random times in random areas across all three campaigns (4 if you count the trial weekend). I'm pretty certain it has to be the trial key because like I said above, nothing has been added to the game apart from that key and the content it downloaded.

Yes mainly but not all...
I'm saying this because not to prove its the card, but you are describing exactly what my machine is doing.

Just had a thought that I'll try out tomorrow, I'm off to bed now as it's nearly 05:00 here and I need the sleep.

Right, I've noticed that I had the "Use Best Texture Filter" option ticked under the F11 menu. Now, I've just gone in game and turned off because I'm wondering if it's clashing with the 16x Anisotropic Filtering I already use as a global settings via the Nvidia display panel. The thing is, when it turned off I couldn't tell the difference, so I hope it's as simple as that.

I added a list on that thread to try and help people that included all the cards affected, including several Nvidia cards. I have an Nvidia card and experience the crashes as well. In the middle of playing, the screen will freeze and the sound goes into a continuous loop until I restart my PC. I personally think Anet made a bad choice to have a sneak peak and release the game a week later. Usually, they do it far in advance so they can iron out all the bugs. It's not however the new trial key. It's the new build.

Weird issue. I was in a similar situation a month or two ago: absolutely random crashes that freeze up the entire PC, and can't be replicated. It ended up having something to do with having Vertical sync turned on. I turned it off, and haven't crashed since. I'd played the game for 2 years at max graphics and with vertical sync on and not one crash. This was with a comparable video card to yours, my 7800 GS.

Anyway, my point is sometimes new updates introduce new bugs. Mess with your video/audio settings a bit and see if you can isolate one as being the issue.

As far as I can tell the best texture filtering option does nothing if you're forcing a specific anisotropic filtering mode via the video card drivers - the option just gets overridden. I've never seen forced anisotropic filtering cause problems in any game.

Well, today I haven't had it crash once. After a couple of hours farming Hard Mode I went to get Razah on my Ele and I just knew it'd crash right after I'd killed everything and had to speak to him again, but no it didn't!

Guildwiki has a list of some video cards that have problems with GW including some nVidia cards. Some asus GeForces were having crash problems, so your problem might be related to that. As for me, i'm using a laptop with a GeForce 6600 and i've been experiencing some graphic issues in GW:EN during the preview event. No crash though. I'm guessing that a recent build made the game messy with nVidia drivers. Playing with my video settings helped a bit but anet has some fixing to do on their part too.

Mines a Gainward, not ASUS but the game seems to be running just fine today. Guess we'll see what Friday morning brings.

I don't know if my problem is related to this or not, but I'll put it here anyways. Whenever I try to close GW, the entire thing freezes up and I'm forced to do a "hard" shutdown. I've never had any problems with this before. I also disconnect a LOT more often, usually several times a day (though this may be unrelated network problems, I dunno). Prior to the preview weekend, GW has never frozen and only rarely disconnected. And this is on an ATI card, which is part of why I'm a bit wary of if it is the same or a related problem. Here are my laptop's specs:

HP pavilion dv5139us
AMD Turion 64 @ 2GHz
ATI Radeon Xpress 200M w/128 MB DDR
Windows XP Media Center Edition
2GB DDR2 System Memory

I might avoid it freezing if I close the process when the program is minimized, but I haven't tried that yet. Right now I'm doing an -image to see if it was some corrupted data, and I'll probably follow-up with a defragmentation.

Also of note, the game itself runs normally aside from these issues.

The last few days have been fine! Now that EotN is active it's crashing again in the exact same manner as I originally posted!

Happened 4 times within 10 minutes tonight during the Jennur's Horde mission, had to hard reboot each time. I've got EotN arriving in the post tomorrow and I want to play it safe in the fact that it'll work like Guild Wars has worked since 2005, i.e. no problems at all!

This is just not fecking on! It's not like I have a crap system that can't handle it Guild Wars at maximum settings, it's more like ANet have just concentrated on fixing the problem for people with onboard (Intel) graphics and haven't even bothered to look into the same problems but with dedicated cards!

ANet support are complete and utter crap! I've been in contact with them since the first crash, just after the EotN trial key was added, and all they keep doing is asking me to send the crash log. They can't seem to understand that I'm unable to send a log that doesn't exist. GW is not generating a log for these crashes, it's just freezing!

using 32-bit vista myself, my gw has also been crashing 2-3 times a day since 31st, but the entire computer doesn't freeze, just the gw. so i can force-exit gw by using ctl + alt + del combo. very annoying to be honest. ticks me off quite a bit.
