Default GW.dat Defragmentation

Okay, so I'm defragging and disk cleaning my computer when a notice comes up saying:

Quote:
Some files on this volume could not be defragmented.
Fragments-----File Size-----Files that cannot be defragmented
2,953---------4.28 GB------\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.dat
So I uninstalled all three campaignes and the expansion and reinstalled it all assuming I mucked it all up somehow (I have the ability to do that to computers. Call it a gift.).

However, Defragmentation reports the same message.

Is this normal? Is the .dat file fragmented purposely by ANet?
I find it a little odd, but the game still runs smooth...

People thoughts on this is all I'm really asking for.

There's a way to get your computer to properly defrag, but I never bothered paying attention. I'm always able to defrag my GW.dat.

It might be you don't have enough free space to defrag a 4gb file. The default windows defragger is pretty weak. Another possibility is that GW is open, but you said you uninstalled it so I don't think that's it.

All in all fragmentation isn't a big issue for computers now a days. I wouldn't worry about it.

i suggest you download contig and use that to defrag the gw.dat file

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...es/contig.mspx

go to command prompt

type in
contig -a c:\program files\guild wars\gw.dat

it should defrag it

usually the gw.dat file is too big for normal defrag to cope with

I use diskeeper, it will defragment the gw.dat file with ease as well as things other defragment tools won't touch.

For those scared of the command line, here's a GUI for contig. It also adds some nice batch operations that enable you to defrag your whole drive via contig if you like.

As for windows defrag failing on GW.exe, that's common. Window's defrag is very poor at making optimal use of your drive's free space, so it often fails where contig succeeds.
