Default Is There A 64 Bit Version Of Guild Wars Available?

I have just installed Windows Vista Home Premium 64 Bit version & tried to play Guild Wars. It started up OK but I began to experience severe lag & it took around 5 or 10 seconds just to open my inventory. The screen then went weird & it crashed to desktop. Therefore I was wondering if it was a compatibility issue with the 64 bit version of Windows as it ran absolutely 100% fine on Windows XP Pro which I previously had installed.

My system specs are:

OS - Windows Vista Home Premium 64 Bit
Video Card - 640mb Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS
CPU - Intel Pentium D 820 2.8Ghz
RAM - 2gb DDR 2
PSU - Thermaltake Toughpower 750w

Your specs are pretty close to mine, and I've been running GW on Vista 64-bit for a couple months now without any issue. It might be something else in your system. I probably would have suspected the OS too, but I think you might be able to rule out compatability issues since it's working just fine on my end.

NVIDIA released some new drivers about a month ago, so if you haven't checked there lately, it might be a good idea to pick them up. I've had similar problems with Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and the issue was the NVIDIA drivers, which were still kinda wiggy. They might still be, I dunno--I haven't had the chance yet to verify whether the drivers solved this problem or not

you might want to try defragmenting or something, that usually works (use Contig, windows defrag just skips the gw file coz its too big)

also, just in case you didnt know your CPU is severly bottlenecking your gfx.

Running Vista 64 Home Premium here too (AMD Athlon 64 X2 chip). Seems to run OK for me too, although I did notice with only GW running (following my new installation of the OS) I was at ~2GB Memory used. Upgraded to 4GB and seems to run a little better (doesn't solve lag issues, of course).

A 64-bit version of GW would be interesting to try out ...

Generally I agree, unless you do software development for 64-bit applications (for example). Unique to my situation: my AMD Athlon 64 X2 system is much happier (read more stable) and faster with Vista 64 than my previous load(s) of XP 32.

Actually I still have the load. I have a SATA hot swap rack installed in my system and can go back and forth with the disks as needed (didn't want dual boot partitions).

MS defrag program does not necessarily skip the gw.dat file. Maybe it does for some, but not for all. When I follow up the MS defrag with contig -a pointed at Gw.dat, it shows only 1 (one) file, and I've noticed in the lag sticky thread that several other people have had the same experience.

Yeah, but I didnt know what I was doing when I bought my OS so I assumed that a higher number was better

That said, I did end up structuring my rig with the future in mind; I went with Vista (even though DX10 isn't even out yet) and an OC friendly gfx card/processor (that I don't intend on OCing) so it kinda worked out. It's kind of superfluous now, but 64 bits might come in handy later.

You bet. I've only got 2 GB in there right now, but I'm for sure going to max out my RAM by the time a 64-bit OS will be useful.

DirectX End-User Runtime - It's dated November 2007, but it was released on Weds.

You are so un/mis-informed.

DirectX is 'in' Windows Vista. It has also been out for a long while..

I thought Quake Wars used it? But anyways that will change for sure in less than a week when Hellgate: London comes out. Also, I believe, Gears of War will be DX10 compatible as well and it is coming out sometime soon.

I have a quick question for you. Do you have directsong active? There is a known issue with Vista (all versions) and network bandwidth while playing media files. I have heard there is a fix, but my friends that use vista say it does not help with lag.
As for 64bit, it offers much better memory management and the ability to support more RAM than it's 32bit counter-parts.

I dont think QW is DX10 although I may be wrong. Gears of War being DX10 sounds right (the graphics are sick) but I'm surprised they'd release it this "fast" for PC. Gears of War has been around for a while, sure, but Vista hasn't really caught on yet and I think having DX10 as a requirement will diminish their market.

As far as I know Quake Wars (and just about every other id Software technology based game, too) uses OpenGL, not Direct3D. They don't like DirectX because it only works on Windows.

DX10 isn't a requirement for Gears of War, since that would cut out to many potential buyers, but it can run on DX10 or DX9.

A 64bit version would require coding that Anet definitely is not going to plan, unfortunately. We could expect GW2 to be more directed at 64Bit systems. Annoying thing is that Vista also comes in 32Bit-Modes, delaying the push even further.

Fact is: Vista drivers are still below their XP counterparts. It's slowly getting better.
