Ok, although this problem doesn't directly relate to GW, it certainly inhibits my ability to play the game, and customer service wasn't enough(no surprise there), so I came here

Ok, here is just some information about my setup before I get onto the other stuff...

Internet provider: Alltel(windstream?)

DSL

Linksys Wireless G Router with speed booster

model WRT54GS

Ok, so I go and buy the router with the above specifications the other day and bring it home. I go through the installation CD, and everything is fine until it tries to detect the router. It says that the router is not detected. So, I call customer support and they have tell me I have to configure it or something like that. So, I do that(weird process of using internet browser to access a page without even being connected to the internet), and the internet starts to work on my desktop I thought everything was fine until I tried to play some GW on my laptop. When I went to connect to the internet, the laptop said it recognized the signal, and that the signal was strong. However, it wouldn't connect. Now knowing that something was weird, I went back through the installation CD that came with the router. The CD once again said it could detect no router, even though I could still access the internet on my desktop. I know that it is not simply a problem with my laptop, as my wii does the exact same thing. A strong signal is recognized, but no actual connnect can be made. If anyone could tell me the reason for this, or help me out, it would be much appreciated.

Once again, I realize that the problem doesn't directly relate to GW. However, as this is the 3rd router I have gotten in the last year(previous 2 didn't work either), I am really starting to get fed up. Also, the problem inhibits my ability to play GW on my laptop.

In all seriousness, it would be much easier for you to return the Linksys and get a Belkin or D-Link. Linksys routers can be a total pain to setup and more times than not, and if the CD doesn't do it for you, you're going to have to manually set every setting in the router manually.

I had no problems setting mine up and its the same type as Jimmys.

All I did was instead of letting the drivers get installed from the cd install, I copied the drivers from the cd to a folder, Then just did the add new hardware and let windows itself do the configuring while directing windows to folder of the just the drivers.

Though it could be something else. as what OS you using.

Another thing to do is load it by the cd and when you can goto the webpage for the router. once you can do that. As you know your comp is connected to the router. Then just unplug the router and count 3 secs then just replug it back in. If you have your router connected to a cable modem. sometimes it just needs to reconfirm the router to cable modem.

In all honesty, to make gw easiler go get a moden and a ethernet cable, Wireless = infinite unavoidable lag.

I've already tried that. Also, the previous two routers i got were d-link.

You have put your security code in the laptop right? (Whatever security it may be (WEP, WPA))

That's what i thought too. Then I tried to fine the security code, and I couldn't lol

Also, I think having a static IP address because of DSL may have something to do with it, any ideas on that?

The first thing I'd check is to see if your router is broadcasting the SSID. If it was turned off by the setup software after the first computer was configured (as it should be to prevent casual snooping of your network), the card probably won't be able to find the router's signal. You'll have to reconnect to the admin panel (what they had you do in your browser before) and either turn the SSID broadcasting back on, or make a note of it and do the setup manually.

As far as the static DSL IP, that shouldn't matter. That's handled entirely by the router, so if it works on one machine, it's got the right IP for the modem and it'll work from all machines.

All in all, though, I'd strongly recommend running the cable too. First of all, it's more reliable, second of all, it's easier to set up, and finally, Linksys consumer products are best described as "complete and utter trash not worthy of being thrown under a speeding bus". The wireless routing software in them often locks up for no apparent reason for several minutes to several hours at a time, but the software that manages the wired connections continues to function just fine. Many times I've seen Linksys routers where the wireless connection is hosed but the wired connection keeps plugging happily away.

Well you must put your WEP/WPA/Whatever security code in somewhere for it to even access..

About your static IP; No, this shouldn't affect it at all, your fine.
