Unhappy It just keeps shutting off... :(

I downloaded the client off the site because I decided to reinstall and start playing Guild Wars again. After that, I started patching. Turns out that every atleast 5 seconds through the patching, it would just close. No error message, no shut down lag, nothing. Just plain close. I would start patching again and it would pick up where it left off, but it would keep doing the same thing.

Finally, I finished patching and I opened the game. I put in my Email, password, my characters showed up, but it kept doing the same thing, over and over again, I don't know how to fix this, if any of you have an idea as to whats happening, please let me know.

Thanks,
Kazekin

The client is unstable for any number of reasons. First, uninstall guild wars again, deleting both your GW.dat file and the client gw.exe. Grab a fresh copy. When you start patching, if it crashes again, post here. Then we take it from there.

Ugh, I don't have my copy with me, so I can't install from the disk. Otherwise I would've tried that rather than the client. Do you think theres another alternative to checking whats wrong?

Not really, if your client or dat file are corrupt, it would cause that. Just redownload everything. It will take sometime, but at least you can play. Try it first. Get back with us.

Remember, you don't have to install from a disk. Just download the client and run it. Guild Wars will function with just the client.

Ok, now it is a stability issue.

First things to do are as follows:

Run other games and see if they crash

If they do, do the following:

Remove your graphics drivers
Download new version and install them
Defrag HDD

Get back to me once you have done those with an update. Then we take more drastic measures.

They don't crash. I run World of Warcraft, Counter Strike Source and Warcraft III just fine. Hmm. :S

Alright, sounds like it is a direct issue with Guild Wars and your PC.

Guild Wars is rather sensitive to voltages I found out. Let us have a looksy at those shall we?

Download this application:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1391

Once installed, follow these instructions:

Go to tools. Create a new report.

Choose Make Choices and generate report. It should be default.

UNCHECK THE FOLLOWING:

Network Adapters
Smart Cards and SIMs
Keyboards and Tablets
Mice and Track-balls
Printers and Faxes
SCSI Devices

Leave the rest

On the benchmarks menu,

CHECK THE FOLLOWING:

Cache and Memory

Next screen. Software area

CHECK THE FOLLOWING:

Memory Usage
OpenGL
DirectX
Environment Variables

On the next area, Testing

CHECK THE FOLLOWING

Configuration Files
Dump Registry Settings
Dump Hardware Regs (it's on by default)

Next screen choose save to disk. Next screen on Format selection area, choose Plain Text .txt Save it as w/e you want to call it.

Email it to me when you are done.

[email protected]

I will await your email to take a look at results to see if I can pinpoint the issue.

Alrighty, I may have pinpointed the issue. The fix might be easy as well. This is only an assumption though.

I ran those RAM address values through analysis on lab computer. One thing I noticed is that the RAM address functions were coming up off by F0 in about 1% of the addresses. The only explanation of this is a fault in the BIOS. The northbridge is either redirecting information to compensate for a dead transistor, or it is altogether wrong (in which case, this would be ALU bound, so that is doubtful) I think if you update the BIOS, it may fix this. The other workaround if flashing a new BIOS over doesn't work is to increase the voltage to the RAM by the lowest incriment possible within your BIOS (if you can at all). Your PC is a Gateway, so the chipset is manufactured to Gateway specs. You will need their BIOS. Grab it from their site based on your model number.

Even if this doesn't fix the Guild Wars issue, it will improve the speed of your PC because the CPU is having to do more error correcting as a result of this data misfile.

Also something to note. Guild Wars, from my experience, can be a very sensitive game to heat issues. Your motherboard is running at 58C, which is rather...spicy. You may want to grab a 120 MM Fan from newegg and ram it into your case to redirect airflow a bit better. I don't know how OEM your Gateway is though, so make sure you can put it somewhere.

Oh, one other thing. You have a 90nm Prescott core P4 Socket LGA775 CPU. That particular one is rated for 1.4 volts. Your voltage is stated to be 1.29. Although minor, there is a chance this could cause instability. If you can raise the voltage by .1, do so.

Where could I download a new BIOS? Sorry, I really don't know much at all about computers lol.

Well, you need your model number, etc. Gateway's site should have them.

I think here:
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp

Follow the instructions CLOSELY. You probably will need a floppy disk to do it, unless Gateway provides an OS based flash program.

Ugh all BIOS I find are not compatible, not even the ones from the gateway site. I went to my BIOS Set Up by pressing F2 on the loading screen, it tells me my BIOS is EV91510A and then a random string of numbers. But I know thats the one that matters. Maybe that will help. I don't know why im having such a hard time with this.
