Default LOW FPS after a while of gaming: HELP!

Hey Guys.

I have been having this problem for a week or so. The problem is this:

After a while gaming, suddendly my FPS drops from it's usual 100 FPS to like 7-9 FPS.
It begins after a while which can be just like 20 mins to 1h but sooner or later it always shows up.
It appears even if I don't use anything but the game I am playing with. It seems that it lower FPS start sooner if I start one game play it, exit and then start another ie: I start GWs, play it a while and then start City of Heroes.
It's not a lag issue but really lower FPS.
The problems persists until I restart the PC which seems to "reset" the problem for a while.

I can't test the issue on other programs other than games, cause that PC is a games-only PC, just games and nothing else.

I've checked the RAM and GPU card, removed them and reinserted them, and the issue stands.
I've removed the dust from the components, to no avail.
I did the Windowns RAM test from the Microsoft web site, which didn't found any problems. I've ran another third party RAM check - quick test though - and no problems were found.

I've installed nTune for performance checks and even during the low FPS periods, the Temperature was normal and it didn't detect any problems.

I've removed my nVidia controllers and drivers, then I used CabCleaner just to be extra-safe, I've reinstalled all drivers, to no avail.

I've ran plenty of spwyware removers, several times, and nothing. I've ran a virus check, nothing.

I am running out of ideas here.
Help please!

My machine:

Intel Pentium 3.00GHz
2.00 GB RAM
nNvidia 7900 GTx 512 RAM

Windows XP, fully updated
Forceware 163.75 from nVidia (current)

TBH it sounds like overheating. Try playing with your side panel open with a small fan blowing air over your components.

Step A). Clean up your registry. Search Download.com for a free to use Registry cleaner and use that.

Step B). Post your temperatures of your CPU, GPU, Motherboard, and HDD. SiSoft Sandra can give those to you, as can nTune.

Step C). Run a stress test on your PC and see if it freezes. Good tests include SiSoft Sandra's testing suite.

Start with those 3 solutions. I await to see your temps.

Temperatures after computer being working for like 4-5hrs, doing nothing.
(just turned on PC and went out for dinner and stuff).

Board Temperature: 34,0ºC / 93.2ºF
CPU temperature: 70ºC / 157ºF
Power/aux temp. : 48,0ºC / 118,4ºF
GPU temperature: 44,7ºC / 112,5ºF
SATA HD temp. : 31,0ºC / 87,8ºF

I have an Intel Pentium D CPU 3,00 GHz, core dui.
Is its temperature above normal? Seems a bit high to me but....?
Should I try playing for a bit until the FPS issue shows up and then check the temperatures?

PS - going to do the stress test now, from Sandra's.

PS II - turned Guild Wars on: CPU = 85ºC / 185ºF?????

85 C is too hot even for a Pentium 4-based CPU. The only reason it doesn't crash is that P4's, and apparently Pentium D's, too, contain a "thermal throttling" feature that lowers their speed if they're running too hot, which is causing the game to slow down.

Make sure every fan in the computer is working, the heatsinks are clean of dust, and there's nothing blocking the airflow from the lower front of the case to the CPU and the back. Consider adding a 120mm case fan if there isn't one already - the relatively long time it takes for the comp to start overheating would suggest the case's ventilation isn't good enough.

Indeed. Load temps on a Netburst based fab should never be over 75C full load. You are damaging your processor heavily at that temperature. The SO2 can't handle those temps, and is going to break down, which will cause gate leakage, which in turn will cause more heat, which will cause more SO2 breakdown, which will in turn cause more gate leakage, which will....you get the idea, vicious cycle.

Get an aftermarket cooler and put it on, as well as some new cooling compound.

That one is fairly price conscious, while performing very very well.

Puts arctic silver 5 to shame. Also, non conductive in case you make a mistake.

1. The Zalman fans I've owned have all been terribly noisy. And their customer service was not the greatest.

2. Since messing up the thermal goop is a surefire way to make one's processor warm, crispy, and useless, you might post step-by-step instructions for replacing it. (Or I might, but I'm lazy and I'm sure you can do a better job of it anyway )

WOW! that is HOT!
As suggested, new thermal compound and a better cpu heatsink\fan.
PS: stress testing in its current state (with those temps) is NOT a good idea.
