For the last 6 months or so my pc very often hangs on boot up, usualy at the very started after reading my memory or at any other time even when logging onto windows.

My pc almost always buzzes very loudly on my first few attempts, every time this has happened it will definitly hang. When it doesn't buzz i find there is a 50% chance that it will hang.

The buzz acauly comes from a peice of hardware which im finding hard to locate even when i stick my ear in with the case open XD

Once i have started the pc up i can restart or leave off for about an hour or 2 without any problems in booting it up.

Another thing that i have noticed is that the longer my pc is left switched off(over 2 hours), the harder it is to start it up. I use my pc everyday and every morning its hard to start up (10+ attempts), but on new years i slept over my girlfriends house for 2 nights, and it took 39 attempts, it even shut itself down after 5 seconds of boot then.

Any tips?

Is it a buzz or a beep at startup? The bios will beep a certain number of times to indicate certain problems.

If its a buzz then I have no idea...

I had the same problem.. I didn't hear any buzzes(beeps?) though. I didn't have any speaker connected to the motherboard, that may be why.

I had to do like this to start up:
1. Attempt to start a few times - it always failed at this point.
2. wait for ~an hour
3. Attempt starting again.. it usually started at this point ^^

I bought a new PSU and now it works perfectly.. ( I think my old PSU was damaged by lightning)

Its acauly a real hardware buzz, not a sound XD

Its a real hardware buzz, i cant seem to find where the sound comes from when i open it up and start up.

I did consider buying a PSU XD thanks anyway may do that.

Yeah didn't even think about a psu, but that makes a lot of sense. Hope that will fix your problem.

Hey, yeah i had this too, and my motherboard made a beep sound (3 beeps) and i figured it all out..the motherboard was replaced..but still it screwed up every so often. I found that un-plugging and e-plugging my pc helped *sometime*

But the real solution is it's probably your HDD, that is probably where and why you cant see/find the buzzing sound. I cba to explain how a HDD works...but basically you need to replace it because it's broekn (is my theory). In the mean time try taking it out, and turning it upside down and booting that way....it helped mine but wasnt a very good permanent solution so i had it replaced.

Be sure to earth yourself when poking around in your pc. Hope it helps!

As said above it probably is a hardware problem.

The first thing we need to do is find out what part is causing the sound and replace the part immediately to avoid total system failure, or the failure of other parts.

Try your best to narrow down the area in the case where the sound is coming from, this can tell us specifically whether it is a hard drive or power supply about to bite the dust.

There is no harm in booting up a machine without a hard drive, so on the next shut down take the 4 pin molex and IDE cable (or sata power and data cable) out from the back of the drive and put them somewhere along the hard drive tray. Boot up the machine and see if the noise stops, you wont be able to boot into your operating system, but if the noise stops then we know.

Power supplies are unfortunately more difficult to troubleshoot because they have an array of symptoms, the only surefire way is to replace it completely, and see if the problem goes away.

if your HDD is suspect, before replacing, d/l a HD diagnostic tool for your model. they can be had for free.
