Default What Ports and Sockets does GW run through?

I was just wondering what ports/sockets GW runs through on most firewalls, also, is activating TCP/UDP ports needed? any other tips on running GW through a firewall when you don't have admin are much appreciated.

EDIT: The Firewall Software is Panda if that helps.

If you dont have network admin, or account admin with windows you wont be able to do anything about running GW.

TCP port 6112 and TCP port 80

I have account admin with windows, how would I go about opening those ports?

what version of panda are you using?

panda itself should allow you to configure what apps you want to let thru. there should be no need to open up ports manually (meaning use panda to do it, if you have to do it another way, if I were you, I'd scrap panda.)

click on icon (if it's in tray?) and look for a settings option. there should be some sort of option to allow applications. add the GW.exe to it.

these are generic instructions...but it is pretty much the same with most firewalls.

The only options that appear when I right click on the panda are various scans... I will see if I can open it elsewhere, as its my school's software I have no idea what version it is, I will update this when I do know.

**Edit: The software is called "Panda: ClientShield" in the "all programs" list, I am still looking for a way to run it in a way were I can do things other than virus scans. Also, my school is running something called "Novell Client" which generates the "403 Forbidden" Messages when I try to access sites such as Facebook or MySpace.**

It's probably gonna go something along these lines.(depending on version)
http://www.spamfighter.com/FAQ_Firewall_Panda.asp
that might get you started. panda looks like a pain in the rump lol.

/reroll
after a quick google fix I couldn't find any helpful info about that version at all.

I think I might have been mistaken in saying Panda was the Firewall, I think Novell is the Firewall software, I'll double check now, thanks for all the help so far and I hope we can resolve this....

Novell is a network operating system, if you don't have network admin or aren't the network admin, you'll need to get a hold of them and ask them to open/trigger the ports.

Just a guess, but if the netadmin wanted happyfeet to play GW at school this thread would not exist

happyfeet - you will not overcome the barriers that are there. Your only course is to request permission to play GW during permitted times and hope for their approval.

I won't get kicked out, don't worry , They don't allow any MMO's or P2P software or anything of that nature, however I do remember last year someone managed to play WoW on a regular (not private) server, alas this person graduated last year... ><

Please continue with the helpful info....

Also, I could "acquire" the main administrative password by running a keylogger as a Daemon but I don't want to have to resort to this....

Are there no other plausible solutions?

As a netadmin myself I can assure you that whether a former classmate got away with it or not, there is nothing you can do on that network that cannot be detected by the netadmin.

My friendly advice would be to simply negotiate a time/place/circumstance with administration to allow you some recreational time to play GW. This is the only safe option for you. -V

Thanks, are there any "unsafe" options?

Depends on the person managing the network, in most cases no. As said above the best way to get your gw time would be negotiation.

They claim GW is a drain on bandwith just like sites like Youtube, etc. So I won't win that way, is it possible to sniff the packet data while logging in to get the port address, then brute force it through CMD?

To view sites that they block you can use internet proxies like http://www.myinternetproxy.com/
They wont like you using it, but i doubt they will find out unless you get caught red-handed.

To bypass your schools firewall you can use HTTP-Tunneling, which basically means you playing the game via a proxy.

You need a tunneling client, your-freedom is the best around (http://www.your-freedom.de/) and a program to route the application through the tunnel, something like ProxyCap (http://www.proxycap.com/)

Pretty simple to use, just startup Your Freedom and press connect, startup ProxyCap and add a rule for the Guildwars.exe telling it to connect via localhost:1080 then start guildwars like normal.

Its a lot of work just to play Guild Wars at school and if they find out your likely to get in trouble, if you have that much free time at school then you should go home in free periods.

You dont have to worry about the admin watching the traffic like Vitas mentioned, all the traffic will be sent over 1080 and can be encrypted.

Guild Wars doesn't support proxy connections.

I knew of these proxy sites, but not the tunneling option you mentioned, I'll give it a shot for sure, thanks very much for the help...

Well PlayNC are wrong, try it yourself.

Tunneling works for EVERYTHING so far, with Your-Freedom you can use OpenVPN to use the proxy as if it were your internet connection.
A lot of people use that method to play WoW if their uni blocks the ports, you have to pay for an advanced proxy package if you need higher bandwidth than the free servive offers, but its only £5~ a quarter i think.
