Default Omega Drivers, are you using them.

When i first bought guildwars, i thought sweet it supports my video card.

Mines an obscure version of the Radeon 9000 with the 9100 chipset.

Of course im running a laptop - toshiba - reliable but not to great performance really, i thought it was my ram so i whacked it up to a gig and half and added more to my GFX buffer - now 128meg.

none of that worked whats this, Oh i have the mobility Radeon.
not well supported until now and only the newer ones like the X850.

it was suggested that i grab the 3rd party Omega Drivers from
http://www.omegadrivers.net

PHWOAH.... so much better especilly during peak hours when id get real bad lag. Latency issues if you may.

Well ist fixed as well as the Bundled toolset that you can tweak to your hearts desire.

Im intrested in your story if you have one. any success?

But his point was; Is that Nvidia cards don't generally have problems with their normal drivers. Probably a sarcastic comment, though I do favor Nvidia > ATI. While both companies do make good cards, I've just always found reliability in Nvidia.

Both make good cards and their drivers work fine. Omega drivers are optimized to enhance game performance. So it doesn't matter who makes what card or what company is said to perform better.

They are 3rd party drivers that are tailored more toward gaming.

How do they make gaming better? Is there any downside?

Well insome case you'll get a certain % boost in FPS, better picture quality, the games run more stable etc. Make those old cards work when their drivers are no longer support. Work better on ATI cards than Nvidia imo.

The downside, crashes, images corupted, driver itself corrupted etc. use at your own risk basically.

I have used Omega drivers with my old Nvidia Ti 4800 128 meg card, I never had a problem with them under Win Xp
ie no stability issues or strange graphic effects.
The improvement was around +5 to +10 fps depending on the game.

I abandoned Omega when there were no further updates for the Nvidia cards.
I havent tried them on my new vista system and do not intend to.

I gave them a shot today. They did increase my GW framerate by about 8. Unfortunately, they weren't stable -- they gave me 5 sec or so of really scary garbage output every time windows loaded.

I would recomend them when your haviing problems or if you a gamer not satisfied with "default".

Heh laptops especially but dont play with the settings if you dont know what they do. - general rule of thumb.

I got atleast a extra 10fps.

Make sure u get the right version for your chipset.
in the readme certain chipsets are phased out with newer releases.

Chthon they wernt stable at first but a few restarts fixed it for me.
also what card you use? nvidia or Ati?

Is there any way to uninstall it so the driver becomes uncorrupted?

You should be able to do a driver roll back via control panel device drivers

Or uninstall via add remove programs and install another driver.

I used to have a Radeon card, and from what I could figure out, the Omega Drivers for ATI are made by mixing various driver files together from different versions of the official ATI Catalyst drivers to work around the occasional bugs that get past ATI's testing in the latest ones. They also include some speed hacks that usually sacrifice a little bit of image quality and/or turn off some compatibility tweaks with minor performance hits that would normally be enabled in ATI's official drivers.

They seem to help performance a little bit, though the real reason I used Omega drivers back then was ATI's crappy driver control panel - the Omegas' ATI Tray Tools replaced it nicely. I think there's an automated uninstaller included if they cause any problems, though I found myself struggling more to get ATI's official crap fully out of the system than the Omegas.

I wouldn't recommend using the Omegas with Nvidia; they just don't do anything any better than Nvidia's official drivers do, and some of those hacks may not have entirely positive effects. Don't fix what isn't broken
