QFT

(as long as you have a modern dual core or better CPU that is)

nehalem is mostly a quadcore, and programming scaled to quadcore is hard and takes more time than duocore.

None the less, this doesn't mean that CPU's are no longer being made for game type performance?

On the new platform, I am sure they will make CPU's more geared towards gaming in due time (as I logically expected) so therefore we still do have something to look forwards to in my eyes.

That article isn't well written, first off.

Secondly, some of the information is misleading as DX10/10.1 games use some of the same technology that HPCs use, and matrix calculations (database much?) will be used in the upcoming raytracing games. Soooo...... Nehalem is worth the wait.

That article also neglects to mention turbo mode (a must for gamers, go go 386 days!), Quickpath (ala AMD's Hypertransport which did worlds to improve gaming performance), and the IMC (integrated memory controller). While Nehalem wasn't built specifically to improve gaming performance (what CPU is?), it will still give a hefty boost to it; just not as much as it will to the markets you mention.

Not with Intel's new compilers and C systems. Simply put, Intel has all flanks covered. Nehalem isn't just a new CPU, it is an entirely new way of doing things. Multi threaded programming is here, and now.

Oh, and how we all love Hyperthreading.... *drools*

When I ran 3DMark Vantage, I pushed my little Q6600 to only 2.60 Ghz (from 2.4) and got a CPU score of 28,311 in "Performance" mode, and a CPU score of 31,763 in "Entry" mode.
And it scores more than the 2.93 Ghz Nehalem version? How did that happen? *scratches head* RAHJA! Halp wiff dis pl0x. lol. maybe you could explain in more detail how they go about testing this? Maybe I missed something out.

Anyways, back on topic...

I've decided to keep my system as is for the next year or so.
All I've changed was: got the GTX260 XXX Edition, 1020w PSU, 26" LCD, and will get a decent cpu cooler this weekend. Oh ya, also got a new mouse (Razer Lachesis) and new speakers lol (Logitech G51)

Yeah... That's what I've been doing for the past few years now... lol

EDIT: And I'd say "YES", I had to upgrade the gfx. Ever tried playing Crysis or Assassins Creed at 1920x1200 on a 26" lcd with a 8600gts? is not fun

lol...well then i'd prolly only upgarde when cool new stuffs come out

like single core -> dual core
or dx9 -> dx10
crt -> widescreen lcd
etc

but im not even really sure if dual core -> quard core is really worth the upgrade unless its really needed for specific games

but thats jus personal opinion

Nehalem isn't just a quad core. It features all types of enhancements that will make it future proof, and far more powerful than current generation stuff.
