Default simple laptop price range, link request.

I am looking for a VERY very simple laptop. Nothing like gaming just a couple things I would like.

Spider solitaire (standard on all windows computers im sure)
Word processing.
Wireless internet.
DVD/CD player (nothing blueray or Hd or w/e just a simple one)
USB slots for flash drives to save word documents.

I don't know what specs a comp needs for alright internet browsing, but I know the specs are REALLY low for processing and solitaire. This laptop would just be used to type up documents, my mom could play her solitaire, and we could both browse the web when we want to without being confined to my room or the office.

So HOPEFULLY it would be a really really cheap laptop since its not a gaming machine but I don't know exactly what to look for. Please help.

I know a few people with Acer computers, no complaints. Newegg.com is a great company to work with on your order, also.

That laptop is the most basic-est laptop you can get, and will do all you listed above...but not much else. If you ever want to do more, especially doing games, this one wont get you anywhere.

and once you get it, go to www.openoffice.org (free) for a word processor. DONT use microsoft works or whatever comes on the computer. All the microsoft freebies are crap.

Microsoft office (word, excel, powerpoint, etc.) is a GREAT program. Your computer wont come with it, only microsoft works or word pad. I assumed you wouldnt already have your own version of word.

definitely go with microsoft word. open office isnt bad, but word is better imo

You could wait for the 9300m integrated solution to become more readily available. This would allow you to play some games on it as well, and have it run Vista at full acceleration without issue. The price will be the same as current integrated solutions.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/product...0_mgpu_us.html

However, I must recommend this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834147784

Reasons: nVidia GPU solution, Turion Dual Core CPU, 3GBs of RAM

The one Snograt linked to was good for 400 bucks, but for an extra 50 USD, you are getting a notebook that is 40x as powerful and actually has enough RAM to run Vista without slowdown. 50 dollars very well spent.

ah ok. I thought you meant all the Microsoft work program things sucked. Yeah I have a professional or business version on a CD from my fathers work so, its pretty nice.
@ Rahja, I'm starting to wonder if I should go 100$ more and get one that can play GW if I wanted, I mean, GW doesn't take much to play anyways and for 100$ more I think im getting a bad deal if I get the laptop with ONLY the specifications on it. Or do you think the one you JUST sent can play GW too? It's not like I play games that require super computer power, and I do remember GW being something of a low end requirement game.

Read a review and it said he could play CoD4 even though it looked ugly. MY computer can't even play that game! It is way to laggy! I'm guessing this COULD play GW (at low graphics settings? which is fine) if I wanted it to.

so hard to decide.

Yes, the notebook I posted can play GW at medium settings with relative ease. I would highly recommend purchasing it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834115487

A bit more, but also a lot more punch. 17" screen is a big plus too. Up to you on where you wish to draw the line on budget. The 8400m is a great little card though for multimedia and mild gaming.

Alright Now if Possible could I compare that with another Laptop?

The first one I wanted was for my mother, but now I am starting to think about replacing my Desktop since 1) The first one YOU showed me the person said he could play CoD4 and my desktop can't eVEN play that for some reason! the only thing My desktop has that most of the cheap laptops dont have is an ok graphics card. I currently have around 80gb of space and a 1 (or 512 mb not sure) RAM and im running out of space to put stuff.

If I were to get a laptop that has around 250gb or more space, 3gb of RAM (since vista takes like 2gb to run normally I'm guessing) and a graphics card good enough to play Guild wars at Maximum capacity and other games at least smoothly, (stuff like Halo or Team fortress 2) what would I need to get? Would it just be better to buy a desktop and keep my monitor and junk? Most likely I would be hooking up the laptop to my keyboard, mouse, and BOSE speaker system (I love it so much!) when I'm at home, And I can't really picture myself bringing it to my college classes...

I don't need a SUPER computer either way, but Im sick of turning the graphics down on GW when I'm in a shiney dungeon. Most of the time It runs at the graphics bar 75% up on the scale but it can get laggy. It would need an ok Graphics card since I'm sure laptop cards are much harder to install and find compared to destops. Also my desktop has PCI, not PCI express so I can't upgrade it with better graphics cards anymore lol. What do you suggest?

Would the one you just sent me be perfect for what I just described? Or would I need to go a little higher in graphics area and RAM? I keep thinking 2gb will be too low for vista...

OH, I also make music videos of guild wars and photoshop art which tends to slow my current desktop down just a tad but I think a higher RAM on another computer would solve that...Just added that incase it was important.

AH another thought, The only reason I'm even THINKING about getting a laptop instead of a computer is they seem to be averaging around the same price nowadays only like 100$ more, for the freedom of using it almost anywhere. I WAS going to buy just a desktop machine and use my current keyboard etc etc, but Im wondering if the convenience is worth getting a laptop.

A desktop would be much more machine for much less price. It would be even cheaper if you built it, which is actually not hard to do. If portability is not an issue, go with a desktop. Just remember if you ever want to take it with you to watch DvDs a the airport or something, it wont cooperate

Could I get a price estimate of a laptop that does What I want vs a desktop (JUSt the machine not monitor and stuff) that is premade (not make it yourself) that does what I want?

I also don't know the specs it will need for what I want so..... that would be helpful.

How big of a difference is there betweel 3 HDD gb space and 4 gb HDD space? guild wars recommended are 4 but does it make THAT much a difference?

http://www.thesource.ca/estore/produ...ine&tab=6#more

would THIS be good for what I want? I heard on another forum they could play GW at max capacity, it has a rather large hard drive and etc etc. Please look and tell me if its the ONE. lol

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16883227066R Would this be a good desktop if I went that way instead?

For desktops, at that price...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16883227067R

That is a very good setup.... and will play GW at max settings at very high rez. It will also play GW2. What is your budget in reality?

Well this would be a combination of a Xmas and Bday present to me, and I'm guessing the max is a shady around 900$ Defenatly no more then 1000. If I could get what I want in a laptop for under 800 that would be great. I would be willing to have a 160 gb Hard drive, a computer that can play GW2 very well (if not perfect) at at least play gw2 at lowest settings, whatever they may be.

Approximately 1gig difference.

The gw.dat file is around 4gigs in size, so you would need that much HDD space, but most computers come with a lot more than that these days. The HP you're going to buy has 120gigs, so HDD space for GW is not a problem.
(Personally, I wouldn't want to go with a recertified HP, but that's just me.)

Lol... if he drops his sales receipt in the store, he just lost more information then shopping online. Some people really can't adapt to the digital age.
