Default Building a system around the Nehalem (Core i7)

I might be thinking a little bit ahead but the Nehalem will be out November 17 and I want to be prepared.

Processor: Core i7 965 Extreme Edition.

Motherboard: MSI Eclipse SLI

Videocard: 2x XFX GeForce GTX260 DDR3 XXX

Memory: ...

Harddisk: 2x Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ, 1TB

Case: Thermaltake SwordM

PSU: OCZ GameXStream 850

CD/DVD/BD: LG GGW-H20LRB

Questions:
1. Where is Nvidia with their chipset for the i7!?!?!?
2. Does the x58 support DDR3 1600?
3. With SLI... in which card do you put the monitor cable? xD

PS Rahja, the Seagate 7200 come with bugged firmware.

So, are you asking for help, or just bragging?

My only advice - make sure the power supply has all the latest connectors for video, SATA, etc., and don't go crazy overboard with the power. If you must go "high end", get something from PC Power & Cooling, or some other top-of-the-line brand. 750 watts (or even less) would be enough for even SLI or crossfire.

If I wanted to brag I would buy a server motherboard and run 2x Quad cores, or go triple SLI with some GTX280's.

So a 700W it is then? >.>

I like the triple SLI option.

I'm no technical expert, but it seems like from what I've read on here that 700-750W should be enough to run a 4870x2.

This would be a nice choice - except it's a bit pricey and the red colour is ... red. (I think it's available in other colours though.)

Get two of these and rig them in SLi:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130398

Then, get this power supply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817814013

As for the case: (has built in system monitoring for nVidia ESA technology)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811133068

This HDD for OS installation:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136260

And this HDD for storage:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148134

Forget water cooling, Nehalem runs oh so nice and cool.

Good to hear you know the release date (to the specific day) that has not been reported on any reputable tech site.

Processor: 965 Extreme Edition (because the bastards at Intel made the 940 and 920 un-overclockable)
No they didn't. What's your source for this misinformation?

Memory: I guess DDR3-1600, unless some X58 motherboard still supports DDR2.
For someone who knows the exact release date for Core i7, its surprising you don't know the chip has a inbuilt memory controller that only supports DDR3. Its not motherboard lack of support. Keep in mind the DDR3 voltage supposedly has to match the CPU voltage (link) so DDR3 1600 is probably the highest you can get.

Personally I don't see the point in making a thread before the actual release of Core i7.

http://tweakers.net/nieuws/55687/int...-verwacht.html It's in Dutch so you''ll have to figure it out yourself, and it is a very reputable site (for Dutch people)

The article seems to suggest processor's under $400 will have a locked bus. This seems very unlikely: the i7 965 EE and 940 are over $400 and only the 2.66Ghz part is under $400. I don't see why Intel would lock the bus speed of only one chip, and would want confirmation from other tech sites (probably have to wait till release). All the rumors so far have been Nehalem overclocks very well. Besides, all of the Bloomfield CPUs can "self overclock" with turbo mode, albeit by very small margins (266Mhz or thereabouts) (source: Anadtech)

Edit: September 18 2008 Fudzilla reports 2.66ghz Core i7 can overclock to 4ghz on air. No screenshots etc provided, so not conclusive. Also could be a ES with an unlocked multiplier.

Everyone and their mom has a Thermaltake (not to mention they all look the same) Jeez Rahja, I'm a girl, I need something unique, and blue... or red but if it's red it won't match with my G15 and G5 so that means I would need a red keyboard and mouse as well, though my screen has a red touch pad, but blue led lights that can also change to red... still with me Rahja? o.O

How about: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...084&CatId=1842

or better yet: http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Produc...C=1274&ID=1414 - now that's a case!

I totally understand silly. However, I must point out that there are very few cases with ESA technology. I would really advise you find one that has it.

shush you. a case that's too flashy will cause you to stare at it when you should be staring at your monitor.

i'd say get a cheaper (but still solid) case and spend the extra cash on the monitor. a better monitor will allow you to frag more. a case with a tiny LCD display won't.

ESA doesn't mean LCD. ESA is simply an interface to monitor your case fan speeds, and adjust them dynamically. It is your best friend when tuning the PC for optimal cooling/performance.

Really moriz... you should be ashamed...

Fine I'll take that case! But I'll be seriously modding it... like putting lots of Hello Kitty stickers on it and breaking that green led light out. But what can ESA do what an G15's LCD screen can't?

less monitoring, more fragging.

Or, you could just get a bunch of low-noise fans and let them run at 100% and skip all the fancy-smancy monitoring.

Isn't ESA "Enthusiast System Architecture" ?

That would translate as "geek gear", n'est ce pas?

What we need is "gurrl gear"

ESA also allows you to monitor the chassis vibration levels, ambient temperature, motherboard backplate temps, and zone temperatures. It is quite handy.
