For the past week or so I have been mulling this machine over in my head. Right as I was about to check out with this thing, I realized that I had no ideas on the finer nuances of laptops and immediately began wondering whether or not this laptop is worth it.

First, I hear a lot of talk on power supplies, and if you have a good graphics card, you need a good power supply. Is the power supply on that Toshiba good enough to handle the card and everything else?

Second, the graphics card itself, is the Radeon HD4650 a quality graphics card for my needs (Guild Wars, L4D at maximum settings), and would it be able to handle the high graphic games that are around now a passable settings (Crysis, DMC 4)?

Any help at all would be welcome.

Is that a good laptop?

Answer: Yes, it's more than good enough for GW and should be fine for L4D too - however your video card will choke on Crysis and other top level games, you could play on low settings and if you drop your resolution too, but it's not what I would call "playable".

You would benefit from a 7200 RPM hard drive and remember that at the resolutions you could play with this laptop (1400x900 max) 1GB of VRAM is just not going to come into play..... I think you could do a little bit better within that budget. Personally I have been really happy with Toshiba laptops, I own 2 and once you get rid of the bloatware and customize them they are very good machines imo...

if gaming is your primary concern and you want to save allot of money get this laptop - 4670 will allow you to play all but Crysis without any major performance hit esp at the native resolution... did I mention it's only $700??? XD

If your original pick's pricing was ok with you go for this one, it will allow you to have about as good a gaming performance as you can expect without paying double the money - even Crysis is plyable smoothly at medium settings.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm really liking the look of that $750 machine, but seeing as I'm dealing with quite a bit of money here, I'd like a second opinion. Also, since you didn't mention power supplies, is it safe to assume that they aren't as important for laptops as they are with desktops? Thanks.

Second opinion? Sure - that $750 MSI is a GREAT laptop for the money.

Don't worry about the PSU

psu should only be a concern when your upgrading but if your buying it out right the manufacture always does the minimun required for the unit to run so you should have no problem and i really like the looks of the 750 deal almost tempted to buy it myself

That laptop is awesome, and should run most games at a playable rate. I personally have a Radeon 4850, but I have toyed around with the 4650 in the rig I built for my GF. It can run most games smoothly, including crysis (Albeit, tweaked settings)...

i'm glad the 4670 have finally made it into laptops. this should give the geforce 9600M GT a nice run for its money.

and yes, there's no such thing as a PSU for a laptop. all the power you'll need to run the system comes from the AC adapter anyways.
