it depends. DX11 is set to become available with windows 7. in fact, it is already available for those running the beta/RC/RTM copies of windows 7. no idea when the next one will come out.

at this point, you shouldn't be concerned with DX version. the new radeons are going to be faster than anything available at this point in time. if you want performance, then you should get them.

5850 is "rumored" to be priced at $299 at release, that would be the little brother to the 5870. There's not been anything official on prices yet of course, but that sounds about right imo.

But nevertheless my experience with upgrades has been never good, and with external flash drives a fresh build is hardly a hassle

what exactly will I be missing from direct x 11 if I buy a current GPU now? My brother tells me that when directx comes out, I would just need to upgrade my driver, nothing more and I would have directx 11. That seems stupid if they're releasing it with windows 7 and the only people who get it are like 5-10% of the population who were waiting to buy the new cards

By guesses most games would be able to get anything by using Direct x 11. So to be honest I wouldn't even worry about it.

Tessellation is what you would be missing, among other things.

DX11 will be (presumably) the standard for games and video cards for the near future, so it's not just for the ppl that buy Win7 as soon as it's released.

If you really want a new PC "now" (and I can't blame you if you do XD ) you could buy something like a HD4850 (can be had for under $100 on sale now) and it will suffice for most games esp if you don't have to play the newest ones at max settings. Then in a month or less you could get a 5850 and your total bill would likely be about $400 for a GPU, less if you sell your 4850 second hand for $60 or so. Just a thought for you to consider.

Now is an especially bad time to be building a new machine. You're coming in just slightly ahead of several release dates as well as Black Friday and the holiday season in general. Thus, you're going to be buying hardware that will either be replaced or drop in price almost immediately.

Building now is similar to buying an old PS3 for $400 in August - right before the new PS3 slim and price drop.

hmm, but that means people won't have access to directx 11 if they don't buy a new GPU, then whats the point of directx 11 coming out if most people aren't able to take advantage of that?

that's how it always goes. it will take a while before a new directx version is mass adopted.

however, the other alternative is to never release new DX versions, which is something nobody wants.

none of this matters to you, if you choose to wait a couple weeks for the new radeons.

Okok, I'll wait a for the new card. I think I have a friend with an computer that hes throwing away. I can probably take its gpu and use it as a temporary one until it comes out. He said his cpu blew up lol

Actually, it will take some time before new games come out using DX11, and most of those will be backward compatible with DX9/10. It's a sort of a toss up as to whether or not you would personally require/desire DX11 any time soon. You could get a relatively cheap card now and upgrade to a DX11 card later if and when you ever need to.

Ahh, thanks very much. I came upon this while reading some mobo reviews at newegg and did not know quite what that meant just from the reviews. With this, I'll do some more reading.

Well it’s been a few weeks, I’ve read PainBringers link and followed Moriz’s advice and waited for the ATI 5000 series =P. This is what I have now; I hope to be buying in a couple of days.

CPU- http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16819115215

PSU- http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16817139006

HD- http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16822136320

Case- http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16811129021

Since there’s no 5850 in Newegg, Ill post a link from a local store I hope to be ordering from (no free shipping in Canada)
- http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...ufactu re=XFX

Motherboard - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813128400
-http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813131482

After reading that link about PCIE ports, the second one, being only 4x instead of 8x, I’ve decided to go with one of these mobos.

Monitor- http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...Specifications

I wanted a 1920*1200 for monitor, but decided against it after seeing the 1920*1080 were about 60 bucks cheaper, then I found this one for 210, what do you guys think?

As for Ram, I really have no idea; I just want enough so that it won’t be slowing down my system. So if you guy could recommend one that would be great.

*Also, does my PSU have enough power?

The total comes to around 1350 canadian before tax right now.

*oops sorry, I forgot to convert all the links to US newegg, so its all Canadian dollars

i have that monitor, and it's perfect for my needs. the 2048 horizontal resolution means that i can have two web browsers open side by side with no need to scroll horizontally. unfortunately my 4890 is very borderline at that resolution, though you won't have this problem.

also, be adviced that the shipping for newegg canada can be very outrageous, what's with the border tax and all. pay close attention to the full shipping charges. if you can find any of these parts (or something similar to them) locally, do so.

your PSU is perfectly fine. the 5850 has better power consumption than a 4850, and you can easily run two of both on that PSU.

yeah no problem with the psu, the monitor sounds like a good deal too - Since you have 2 mobos posted I would suggest the Gigabyte one, it's nearly $100 cheaper and has all teh features you are likely to need (ever). It also supports higher frequency RAM without Overclocking it, which is a plus. I'd get the cheapest Name brand DDR3 2000 6Gb set I could find. DDR3 advantages are minimal unless it's a high frequency, so by all means get some good stuff... or you might as well have cheaper DDR2 in there. lol

your build looks good, and will handle anything you throw at it for awhile.

name brand as in corsiar and g skill right?

also, I forgot to mention, I have found all the parts listed in the newegg links on the site of my local NCIX, so no worrys about shipping there

Edit: Theres this bundle deal, its g skill and 2000 but its only four gb, what do you think? If its not enough would I be able to just add 2 gb myself?, that ram is basically 50 dollars in that deal

G Skill is excellent.... I would buy Corsair, Patriot and OCZ without hesitation as well, also PNY, and Mushkin if the deals are good. You could add another 2GB of the same RAM if the timings etc are the same..... i5 & i7 can use triple channel, so it's best to get 3 sticks of something, and 3GB is not "top end" anymore. hehe

but when I look at the specifications on the i5 mobo, it says dual channel

Edit: For the DDR3 2000, theres only two on Newegg, G Skill and Kingston, so I guess if I go 6gb, then its G Skill then.

Edit: Nevermind, the 2x1 GB RAM at 2000 are at least 70 dollars, so then for sure its G Skill 6gb ddr3 2000 then

lynnfield CPUs are dual channel.

btw, after some rather thorough testing, many people have concluded that memory speed doesn't matter all that much for the lynnfield. you don't particularly need to shell out the money for the fastest memory kit available.
