Default Asus or HP?

Hi,

Since I need a laptop for school I've been looking around a bit. I found these two laptops, but I'm not quite sure which one I should buy.

HP Pavilion DV6-2120ed - Which costs around €575,-
Asus K50AD-SX014V - Which costs around €525,-

Guild Wars will be the only game I'll play on it. I'll be using it mostly for Photoshop, Illustrator and coding. I think the specs meet the requirements for that (the HP one might be a bit better than the Asus laptop?). I was wondering though, which has the best quality? I need to travel 4 hours a day, so it needs to be able to take a hit. I'm also wondering if anyone has had any experience with the customer services of HP and Asus? If it takes 2 months to get it repaired I won't be able to do anything at school for 2 months.. (Asus has 2-year warranty while HP has 1-year warranty btw).

Other laptop suggestions are welcome too.

HP has better specs on everything other than the size of the hard drive... it's worth the difference in price. No clue on how the UK warranty works for either company.

i dont know much about computers, but my dad and I both have ASUS laptops and they work very well. we both have guild wars on our ASUS laptops and it runs smoothly. The service and support is excellent in North America, but I've heard otherwise on European side. :/

id get an ASUS :P

No, don't get the ASUS... it's vastly inferior compared to that HP.

That HP won't overheat, it doesn't have components that run at high wattage...

Get the HP, end of story.

In a recent edition of PC World magazine, HP scored dead-last in customer service - for the second year in a row.

And Asus scored either first or second in quality in terms of problems upon arrival and problems down the road. They scored just as well as Apple.

Asus IMO is the better company of the two.

The HP computer is by far superior.

Maybe look around for different laptops, I am sure you can find a better price for a better laptop, have you tried newegg?

As to talk about the hard drive, the HP has a 7200 RPM hard drive and the asus is a 5400 RPM hard drive.

The 7200 RPM hard drive even though being less storage, is most likely more expensive, the RPM is the speed of the Hard Drives.

I have used both 7200 RPM and 5400 RPM hard drives and the 7200 RPM is damn sure worth every single penny paid, even though my 7200 RPM has half the storage of my 5400 RPM it is ALOT better.. And I run my 500gb 7200 RPM hard drive in my pc instead of my 1TB 5400 RPM hard Drive.

I 100% that ASUS is a superior company; they are arguably the best notebook company on the planet right now.

The 7200rpm vs 5400rpm argument is valid in most cases right now, but with the new 4K sector drives releasing, 5400RPM 4k Sector drives can outperform most mid to mid-high range 7200RPM drives. Platter rotational speed makes little difference in comparison unless you know platter density and amount. That's the caveat.

Dude I hope I am not too late and you didnt already buy the HP notebook. Trust me never ever buy a notebook or a pc from HP or Dell. The hardware they use is cheap and low quality. People get easily blinded by processor speed, ram sizes and so on. But they never check out the manufacturer and the small-printed information. If you want to choose one from those two notebooks, please please dont do the same mistake so many people on this planet did and get yourself the ASUS notebook. I am very passionate about that right now because I dont want you to ruin your life. I had to send my HP notebook to the repair-centre twice in 12 months because the Grafics just broke from playing Guildwars. I vow for my statement because I had an HP notebook myself, it had AMD and ATI and it was crap. HP made a name decades ago and now they dont care about what they sell and treat their customers. HP just takes a dump inside an empty notebook case and then sells it for 600$. So please dont believe those HP fanboys or whatever you wanna call them, they have absolutley no clue, or they just happened to be one of the few people who actually got a working HP notebook. Please forget HP and Dell ever existed, just ignore this fact. I personally dont like AMD and ATI because their hardware sucks. After I changed everything to nVidia and Intel my PC performed much much better.

AMD/ATI makes fantastic hardware that's consistently ranked on par with Intel/Nvidia by every major reviewer.

You had a bad experience but you're badly over-generalizing it.

From personal and friend's experience, with HP it's hit or miss. You will either get a laptop that will run decently for 2-3 years (or more) or one that will constantly break. Mend my dad didn't have problems with ours (though the were business models so a bit more sturdier than the consumer ones you would get at best buy). For my sister and three of my friends though, theirs were broken often of had random BSOD and freeze issues. GW was about the only game that they ran on those laptops, the rest of the time they were used mostly for MS Office.

On the other hand, i had almost no problems with my ASUS, the North America customer support is also very good, you would have to check if it's as good with the one in your country. From what i heard from friends in France it takes a long time to get anything fixed.

I'd agree that HPs are very variable in quality. The choice is really up to you - the HP may (or may not) have quality/support issues, but it has much better specs. I'd have to say that I lean towards the ASUS in the choice between just those two.

i have a three year old HP laptop; it's still working just fine. the only thing i had to change was the battery, since the old one died.

this has got to be the most ridiculous drivel that i've ever read. you clearly have no clue, so please refrain from giving tech advice.

Just like all those MacBook owners?

Personally, I would have to say that I have, in my years of fixing computers, run into more problems with HP laptops than with some others. But it's always hard to tell if the problems were user generated, or the result of a flaw in some other sub-manufacturers component (like the nVidia graphics chips in the Macs and, maybe, your HP).
On the other hand, I haven't seen any greater number of problems with Dell, than with any other brand. The only problem I've had with Dell's was the difficulty of upgrading or repairing them, but those problems had to do with the proprietary nature of some of their components, not the quality of the machine. (And even that seems to have lessened lately)

I'd get the HP laptop based on the specs. I have an ASUS laptop and HP laptop in my house. I've never had any problems with both. Just make sure to delete the installed trial programs before using your laptop.

All HP products I own and friends own have proven to be tanks quite frankly, and I have never had a problem with support it seems average to me.

Asus I have not used much.
