Default PSU ATX cable / Motherboard ... wtf?

Yeah...this is probably a stupid question...

I've just bought a 650W PSU for the PC I'm building. The ATX Power cable has 12x2 pins, the motherboard only 10x2. My guess would be I'd need another motherboard ( I need a 650W PSU for the videocard ).

Or, would it be safe to just plug it in anyway?

What is your motherboard?

Manufacturer and model?

I guess your talking about the motherboard's power connector.

Some motherboards use a 20 pin connector and some use a 24 pin connector. Most of the time you'll get on the newer power supplies a 20+4 pin connector, two connectors for the power, depending on your motherboard's needs.

Now if yours is a solid 24pin connector and you plug it in a 20 pin, aslong as its plugged in the right direction, I dont think there should be a problem. It's basically the same principle as if you had a 20+4 pin connector and dont use the 4 pin connector.

Would just like someone to back up my comments to make sure they are accurate.

I have one solid 24 pin connector, and one 4 pin connector as well. The 4 pin connector can easily be connected, I can also attach the 24 pin connector to my 20 pin motherboard, but I'm just wondering whether it's safe or not.

Thanks for the help so far

Many power cables have a little section on the head you can snap off to make it 10X2. See if yours has a little joint or something...

Haha nice one, I have indeed been able to snap it off to make it 10x2.

Can I just leave the loose 2x2 hanging there?

You should be able to, however, does your motherboard also require a 12v four pin somewhere near the CPU?

Yes it does, I've already plugged that one in. It should all be ok now.
