Does the laptop have Intel video hardware? Some parts of EotN and at least Wehhan Terraces in Nightfall have been known to crash with them due to bugs in Intel's Direct3D implementation.

If you don't know what video chip the laptop has run dxdiag to find out. In XP, at least, you can do this by pressing the Windows key+R to open the Run dialog, typing dxdiag and pressing enter. The video chip's type is listed in dxdiag's Display tab.

There's some tool called 3danalyze that can mess around with Direct3D and possibly work around the bug, probably at the cost of performance or graphical quality. See this thread to see how to configure it.

There is a problem with some intel chipsets and Rata Sum. I'mn guessing it's probably the same T&L problem as wehhan terraces.

I'm having the same problem with Rata Sum. I don't have an onboard intel card mine is an ATI radeon 9800 pro and I have the latest driver version installed (Catalyst 8.2 I think).
I've beaten all three other campaigns and had no such problems in wehhan terrace, which is usually mentioned as another problem area. I reached rata sum for the first time with one of my characters, and as soon as all files finished loading, the game crashed. Same error no matter how many times I go on that char, and the town never opens it just says loading files, then crashes.

All my other chars in different towns etc are loading just fine. I've already tried using the -noshaders and -dx8 switches, separately and together, but same problem. Any ideas?
