Hmm, well, I use separate headphones and mic. (Actually, I only wear the headphones if there are a lot of folks on vent. Normally I just use the speakers b/c all headphones hurt my head after wearing for a while.)

I've got Sennheiser HD 280PRO headphones. They're not USB, just the standard headphone jack. They do sound great. I got them more for listening to music w/out disturbing others than for gaming.

I've got a desktop mic, a USB one, Logitech 980186-0403. Guildies tell me it's not as clear as the built in mic I used to use on my Toshiba laptop. But it works.

Our resident tech expert friend uses a 3.5mm headset/mic combo that he says is rather old, Plantronics gamecom 1. He sounds fine on vent.

Another friend tells me he uses a USB headset/mic combo, the Logitech a-0356a. He's the only person in the guild that uses voice activate rather than push to talk, and I've been really impressed with how clear the sound is and how no background noise gets transmitted. He's using XP, not Vista. Like most folks, he had to fuss with system and vent settings at first to get any sound to transmit.

How many different headphones/mics have you tried so far? Are you sure the problem isn't more like your sound or vent settings? Most of us use XP, not Vista, if that helps.

Should actually buy a pair I suppose. Been too busy with making money to spend any of it.

I've got a pair of Sennheisers that I use for my MP3 player. Prob look into Sennheiser. If the USB headphones don't work, it's either Vista (doubt it) or my soundcard.

Can you hear with the set you have now? If so, it's not a headphone issue as much as a mic issue. "You can hear us, we can't hear you" kind of thing. Right? (I could be completely confused about what the problem really is ... it's not that unusual for me to be completely confused.)

Sennheiser headphones are top quality.

Look for the Sennheiser PC 135, PC 156 or PC 155 M 145 range, all USB and senn. quality

I did a fair bit of research before a headet with a mic.

The factors I looked at were comfort and microphone quality. Comfort is important for extended usage - there is nothing worse than developing sore spots on the crown of your head, or on your earlobes, while in the middle of a long session.

I narrowed the best headsets down to the following two:

eDimensional AudioFX Pro 5+1 Headset by BenHeck : http://www.3dgameman.com/content/view/10668/103/

- this one gets pretty top reviews around the place and the mic is retractable.

Both of these headsets have a lot of positive reviews. I have selected these particular reviews for posting because this guy does video reviews - nice.

I ended up buying the Steelsound 5H v2 for Christmas, not the USB version just the plain version. I don't really understand why people would want the USB model because it is seen by the PC as another soundcard and needs another lot of drivers loaded.

Have been using it for 2 months every day now and it is a sweet headset. Comfy full cup ears with cloth cover, not vinyl.

The sound is excellent and the mic is great. I recommend them highly.

I use a pair of Senns HD555 with a Zalman Clip On mic. Got the phones used from www .head-fi.org which is a great place to check for info also.

p.s. I got the phones for $80 shipped and the mic for $6. So not a bad deal.

My laptops sound card is pretty meh. I could get an external card, but that kinda defets the purpose of having a laptop.
