Default Ventrilo Connecting

Hey all, I'm not too sure if anyone can help with this, I don't really 100% know what the problem is, but I figured this was as good a place as any to post about this.

First things first, I play GW on my University network, we get provided with a pretty fast connection for free, but with ports restricted. Guild Wars still works, somehow the ports for it aren't blocked, but Ventrilo can't connect.

So my question is : Is there a way to change the ports that Ventrilo uses to connect? Unblocking ports on the network is not an option, due to me not paying for the connection as stated above.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I don't think there is, but there are programs to do that for you. The one I have is Proxifier. It isn't free, but I'm sure you could just endlessly uninstall and reinstall the program to abuse the 30 day free trial.

It'll force Vent through a proxy server though, so you might get some pretty severe lag.

From 2.2 and up you cannot change any of the port numbers unless the Ventrilo Server is paid for.

As far as I know, my guilds Ventrilo server _is_ paid for ... does that mean it's possible?

Yes it does, however the issue is that you're on a University network and most likely their hardware firewall is blocking access to the ports you need.

Have you considered asking the network administrator?

Asking a network administrator isn't really an option. Online gaming and using communication programs like Skype, etc are largely discouraged, and as we don't pay for the connection, we have very little sway over things. Is there a way to tell which ports are blocked and which are not, and then would it be possible to push Vent through some unblocked ones instead? I don't know much about networking, so sorry if I'm asking stupidly annoying questions.

Why wouldnt you be allowed to ask an admin to unrestrict one particualr port if you get friendly with one?

As for gaming being discouraged.. I know a few Universities which have their own online gameservers for games such as HL2DM, CSS and similar. It shouldnt be too much of a problem if you say its for Vent. Its not as if it can be used to transfere loads of viruses or spy on the latest research (which shuuld be kept on a separate network anyways).

At my university there is a seperate offline server for games such as CSS, no way of getting the University to change ports for something like Vent. It really is a case of we don't pay, so we don't get any say in the restrictions. As far as anything academic goes, there's nothing restricted that we need - it's only recreational use that's restricted, no grounds for complaining to a university.

Without a proxy, you are pretty much screwed in an edu environment. What I would attempt is to create my own vent server and serve it though P2P ports, which many are oddly still allowed in .edu environments. Do a port scan on your universities firewall and see what TCP traffic they are allowing through. Host your own vent server and serve it through one of those ports. Good Luck! They will probably catch the increased bandwidth traffic on the odd port, though. They tend to monitor traffic on errant ports.

Ah, thanks alot The Way Out - if we're detected doing anything that can be interpreted as p2p, it's an instant and permanent ban from the network. Guess I'll have to wait till I graduate for Vent freedom

Ahh... that sucks... do you have a copy of their disclaimer? They may allow FTP and other ports for uploading...

Think this about covers it, not sure if they've changed it since though.
