im on a 3 year old laptop and really can't afford anything don't have a job this year

my specs are

256 megs of ram
intel pentium 4 cpu running at 2 gHz
ATI mobility radeon

i have been running it at the lowest settings and still get only around 5-10fps and only about 3 when fighting a mob.

and is there a way to run gw on 256 color i don't really care how it looks (im used to runescape graphics) as long as its playable.

do you have all the latest drivers for your graphics card and motherboard?

and what operating system are you using?

i just got updtated drivers for everthing and don't see a real diffrence

and for the OS i think its xp home Edition or something like that ill check when i get home

if you are running xp, it may be worth trying to switch to classic view, as this will save memory, leaving you more free to play guild wars with.

you can switch to classic view by right clicking on the desktop, then clicking properties. Under one of the tabs, (cant quite remember which, dont have a pc to hand), there is a themes option that says windows xp, change it to classic.

Yeah and dont run anything nessecary while playing so like only Firewall + Gw nothing like msn or music and stuff

on my machine with geforce 1 and amd athon xp 2000+ processor and 512ram i was able to run gw and winamp streaming family guy over shout cast

i delete all Unnecessary processes when playing guild wars.

also isent there a command line to run guild wars with no Shading if there is can anyone tell me the syntax of it.

i think its the ram that is the limiting factor on the machine, so i wouldn't recommend trying to do lots of stuff at once

whould this command line work like this...
start (path to gw.exe on most comps its c:\program files\guildwars\gw.exe)
-dx 8 -noshaders

right click on your gw icon on the desktop, hit properties, at the end of the line which shows the file directory (c:\program files etc), add -dx8 -noshaders

Yeah that's your main problem. I'm surprised XP will even run on your laptop! It takes, what, ten minutes to boot up?

Is it that you don't have enough money to buy a new laptop? Or you can't spend any money on it at all? Because a 512 MB stick of RAM is about 40 usd online. That's what I would suggest if you can afford it.

Generally the answer to most problems is MOAR RAM.

/agreed, xp on 256 is like suicide

if switching to classic doesnt help enough, (it should help quite a bit), then i would suggest buying more laptop RAM, or installing windows 2000 or 98 on your machine

Sorry to hear about that. I'm a college student, so I understand what it's like to be broke.

Lol, only three minutes? Well, that's no so bad. I've worked on laptops with 256 mb and they can take almost ten minutes to boot. One had Limewire on it...though it wasn't going to boot at all. Heh.

got my fps up to 10-15 in towns and 7 in combat with using -dx8 -noshaders, classic view, deleting all Unnecessary processes on my comp, putting every setting in guild wars as low as possible, defragmented my c: drive, and putting gw.exe on high priority in processes.

anything else you guys can think of short of adding more ram?

It may take a little load from the CPU.
