Default Guild Wars starts crashing all of a sudden

Ok, this is a weird problem that has occoured to me today, and I don't really know how it happened.

I was playing like always, my comp went always fine with a Guild Wars with options set almost to maximum.
Suddenly, the game freezes, and nothing could be done to close the window except rebooting the whole system.
So I did.
Now when I try to log on Guild Wars, it crashes as soon as it's launched.

what type of freeze are you experiencing, is is permanent, or does it occur every few seconds?

Have you tried other games to see if the crash also occurs there? It would help pinpoint the problem.

Sorry, but basically that was the problem.

Anyway, it's not GW related, I'm afraid it's something wrong with my PC: not only crashes with GW, even with other games or even with some programs (Like C Cleaning, Heavy lag with Windows Media Player).

I'll guess I'll just wait for the technician to come and repair my Hard Disk.

Last time on my Radeon 9800 I experienced this with GW it was due to my graphics card overheating due to a dying fan on it. If you see, or used to or still see odd little flickering boxes on your game before it crashes (they could be just about anywhere on the screen), this is absolutely the same case and heat is an issue.

A solution would be to try running the game in windowed mode by hitting Alt+Enter as soon as the game loads up.

Anyways, this is just one possibility..

Most crashes of this nature occur due to the graphics card overheating, download speedfan, or similar program, and check your gpu core temp when it is under load, if it is 60-80, then you have a problem.

not entirely right jackers since the 8X00 series from nvidia get superhot the only way to get those cooled is getting a better fan for them

but it indeed sounds like a dying fan in that case you can mostly pick up a new one like the zalman ones which are great or make one block yourself (not advised if you don't know what you are doing)

My suggestion: leave one of the sides of the pc open and see if that fixes it and download a prog like speedfan to see if the fan of your gfx card hasn't died cause of dust

my last 8800gt starting doing this, i had to get it replaced by xfx, the problem was a dodgy fan.

/agree with above, take a side off your case, and see if that helps

I doubt it's the graphic card that got overheated.

I thought at first it was just an issue with the game, but now I see that many more programs aside from that are involved: Windows Media Player/ Movie Maker , for example.

Anyways, I'll update once I get my Hard Disk repaired. The problem can't be resolved now, I'm afraid.

I agree that you should check the temperatures in your computer. Overheating can cause freezing, though there are other things that can cause freezes as well.

You can check your hard drive at boot level by doing a chkdsk /r
To do this just go to Start > Run and enter
Code:
chkdsk /r
. You will need to answer yes to the prompt and restart your computer for the scan to occur. It will let you know if there are any bad sectors on the hard drive or if any repairs were necessary.

Also, use HDTune to check your hard drive's SMART status and temperature.

Ok, since I've changed my HD I'm gonna up this thread.

Nothing worked, I can't explain why.
Guild Wars just keep freezing up. This time, it hasn't created a crash log either.

This time, let's try and posting my Computer's Specs

Windows XP
Pentium 4
1,86 GHZ Processor
2,00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7500 LE

Open it up and blow the dust out of the fans and heatsinks And check that all the fans are running.

I think I'm haveing the same problem as you.

I was Vanquishing before. Then My comp froze, so I rebooted

Then when i try to logg back on it crashers just after i logg on.

So if we are haveing the exact same problem, I doubt it is a Ram, Graph card, Dirty fan Ect Ect.Maybe a bug in a recent update?

I will be looking at this thred to see if you find anything out

Thanks
Hope this matter is solved.. i really wanna play GW lol

You are probably not seeing the blue screen. You should turn the automatic restart off and check the error you are getting. Configuration panel, system, advance, parameter and turn off automatic restart. May not be exactly name like that but I'm doing by heart since my windows is in French. It may give you a bit more info on the crash.

Ok, things are getting better: actually I can login without any crash.
Though the game lags like hell; I've been trying all the defrag methods listed in the sticky thread, but nothing happened or improved.
I expect lag, though I play with everything set to medium.

- have you tried changing video driver versions? might be issue with the version your using..

- updated / changed sound card drivers?

- Tried completely disabling the sound in-game?
- or at least tried lowering the sound "quality" slider?

- Have you tested the ram? Possible bad ram... if you have 2 sticks of ram or more.. try removing all but 1 stick and seeing if the crashing/lag go away.. if it does, definitely bad ram, if not try swapping the ram around to test all sticks

- Got a different video card? If so, try uninstalling drivers and them installing the different video card... if problem's go away, then issue with video card (assuming trying different drivers didn't resolve the issue).

- Make sure you don't have any p2p programs running (like bit torrents, limewire, etc).

- Have you scanned your system for spyware/viruses? (I know you say you have new hd, but I'm not sure if this means you did a completely clean re-install or a install & copy-over)

- Have you run dxdiag and ensured you can do all appropriate test's (ie graphics and sound test's)

- updated windows via windows update?

- run CCleaner to get rid of all the garbage in your registry & HD?

You guys are too indepth. First thing you do is restart your computer, in fact you might want to do this multiple times. If you're still having problems, try turning off your computer, leaving it for probably two to three hours, and try it again. Always do this first if you have any crashing/error/weird freezing problem. Never close your computer by closing the power out or pulling the plug.

Ok, I've tried again, but only got in multiple crashes.
So, I tried to think on the overheat issue, and I downloaded Speedfan.
Looks like something is actually on fire (xD), but I don't really know what it is.
Here are a couple of screenshots to help you:

- Normal Activity

Let's call this a "standard" temperature, to be clearer the temperature relevated when nothing is running on the PC except SpeedFan.
As you see there is a flame near the "Core" word, and it's temperature is definitely over limits.

- When Guild Wars is running

From what I understand, nothing is wrong except for the "Core", whose temperature overheats.

I looked up the settings, and I think this "Core" is my Graphic Card. Before doing a mistake I'm looking forward to your response =P

The question is: What's the problem and how to solve it? xD
