Default Headset troubles

Recently something went wrong with my user account in XP and I had to delete it and make a new one. Since then I cannot get my headset to work again, no matter how many settings I tweak. It worked fine before, I just can't remember what I had to do to get it to work. I use vent, but I haven't even really tried to use it on vent yet because the headset doesn't work with the sound recorder or anything else I try.
First:
It is a Plantronics Gamecom 1 Headset
I have a ASUS motherboard
My speakers work fine, they are logitechs
The headset is not USB, I have it plugged into the back of my computer, the jack is labled "Mic In"
Not sure what my sound card is actually...
The mic worked fine before I made a new account, now I can't get it to work

Really my only thought is that the wires are messed up somehow, I'm pretty sure I've tried almost everything, which is why I have come here.

Any help is greatly appreciated,
Kel

hey,
There wouldn't be any Cd required for it that you may have forgotten you've had?
it won't work for anything or just 1 program?
Try making sure your computer has the headphones as the output sound device and the microphone as the input if you havn't already.

Is the whole headset not working ( head phones and mic ) or just the mic ? I remember having to enable my mic on Xp , Think I did mine through Msn messenger by starting a video call, which brings up a mic setup wizard. ( though im sure there’s another way)

Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices

I've had so many problems in the past getting mics to work. Counter-intuitive settings, usually.

How do I change it?
The realtek was the only thing there to choose from, does that mean my mic is not being detected correctly?

i think right clicking the speaker icon on the bottom left of the screen then clicking recording and playaback options might help.

Sorry about that. The only help I can offer is what little Microsoft have on the subject - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306537/en-us.

That article is about Speech Recognition, but it does have a section on Mic setup.

Incidentally, for Vista users, I discovered that my mic wasn't working while I investigated this. The fix is to click on the Microphone icon in the pic I posted above, then click on "Set Default."

Sounds like you are using on-board sound (not that that matters.)

Many on-board sound setups and some sound cards have the provision to do 5.1/6.1/7.1 sound, but they lack enough jacks for all the connections. So, sometimes, the "mic input" jack is used as "rear channel" output (or some such) when the sound is configured for 5.1 (or more) sound. In that case, you may need to set the speakers to "2 channel stereo" or "headphones" to get the "mic input" jack to actually be a mic input.

So, somewhere in your sound settings there may be a place to specify the speaker setup you use and/or what the jacks are set for. It's also possible that you need to install some software from the CD that came with the mobo, in order to do that.

You're absolutely right in that, Quaker. It's odd that, with all the technological advances we've seen in computing over the years, sound card configuration is still an arcane art from the dark ages.
