Default NOD32 - just the AV or the firewall too?

AVG 8 is about to expire, and I've been swayed by you guy's recommendation of ESet's program.

Now, NOD32 alone is £40 for a 2-year license, whereas the security suite (same with firewall and anti-spam) is £60.

IS THE FIREWALL A NECESSITY?

I've been in a recent discussion that told me a good router that stealths its ports precludes use of a software firewall. Should I go cheap? Or should I go belt-and-braces?

As usual, double £ to get $

No experience with NOD32, but a software firewall is useful for monitoring outbound traffic from your software. It's probably not a necessity if you have a router. I chose cheap, and still use free antivirus/firewall software.

Well, I guess you won't need a firewall with a VERY good router firewall.

But most likely I wouldn't take any chances, I use "COMODO" It's a great firewall, but can be annoying for the first few times of running stuff.

Using NOD32 (AV only) and Comodo Firewall. Never tried NOD32's firewall since I'm unwilling to switch from something that already works for me.

You do realize AVG 8 has a free edition

http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe

All you need Snog

On the router yeah there firewalls are somewhat good and if you back it up with an AV you dont really have to worry like Rahja does or be as paranoid as others are.

Thanks, Mani - yeah, I know. I have this odd habit of paying for stuff when I really don't need to. Possibly subconsciously making up for all the pirated crap I've used in the past

My boyfriend has NOD32 and I find it's incessant popups annoying. I swear by AVG personally. ANd.....Nod32 blocks Guild Wars. You have to turn in off to play.

I've been using Nod32 and their firewall with no problems playing Guild Wars. It uses the least amount of resources of any AV I've tried. I tried Avast before this but had to disable it while playing GW else it would slow my computer down too much to play. AVG also seemed to use a lot of resources. McAfee and Norton are horrible.

you should tell him that when you are using his machine you're gonna switch off the interactive filtering mode. [right click on icon in tray, open window, click on setup, then personal firewall, then switch to automatic filtering mode...bye bye pops]

/edit all you have to do is allow GW. then it's not blocked.

and yes I promote nod32/eset smart security, however I turn the anti-spam off. if you're using FF, it's not needed.

I agree that NOD32 is annoying to no end. I tested a trial in a VM and it was constantly popping up alerts about this that and the other.

I've used Norton (due to it being a trial preinstalled) and hated it, used to use McAfee many years ago, tried AVG and didn't care for it due to how hidden some things felt, but have always been happy with avast (when I used av, I quit using antivirus over three years ago).

Ok Tarun, I'll bite - considering you're somewhat of a PC security guru, WHY don't you use AV?

I know it's going to involve not downloading shit, but how do you manage to stay threat-free with no AV?

NOD32 never talks to me unless I talk to it first.
The only popups I get is when the files are updated.

I don't like the Firewall that NOD32 offers, I'd stick to Comodo, hell not having one is better than NOD32's firewall.
