Default GW shutting down

hi,

i just bought a new pc. its the new gateway fx4710-ub003a, intel core 2 quad q9300 quadcore, vista 64 bit, nvidia 9800gt with plenty of ram. probably once every 2 days for the last 1 1/2 weeks since i bought the pc, gw would shut down on me. gw would shut down and my desktop will show. the pc will also make a fast vibrating noise. when im on vent, vent will still be active, i can still surf the net. but the noise is bad and i cant open gw unless i restart my pc. i dont know if this is my pc or if its vista or what. any ideas? thanks

Firstly, look for an Arenanet.txt in your GW folder - that will tell us if GW has crashed and why.

When you say the PC makes "a fast vibrating noise" - do you mean that, or do you mean the sound is from your speakers/headset? And is it only on Vent?

is the pc itself making the vibrating noise or is it just coming from your speakers? check the connection. as for gw closing itself, do you have any programs set to run automatically (virus scan, etc) or is guild wars actually crashing (you're getting the message that guild wars closed unexpectedly and if you want to send a report to anet). guild wars didn't run very well with vista for me which is why i installed xp on my new computer.

thanks for responses..

the noise is coming from speakers..its a fast vibrating electronic drum pounding noise. this noise only happens when gw shuts down. its also happened when im not on vent. there is nothing set to auto run also. basically, i have to restart my pc everytime. im thinking of replacing this pc with another one of the same model but a different unit.

this in the arenanet file.

So hard to diagnose faults without actually being there :/

That drumming sound - is it always the same sound, or is it different every time? A total crash often involves "sound looping" where a small segment of sound repeats endlessly until the system is shut down or the apllication terminated.

The fact that it "crashes" to desktop with vent and browser still working is unusual. I wonder if this is one of those "Guild Wars failing on dual-core" problems? Try starting GW, then opening the Task Manager, selecting the gw.exe application, selecting "set affinity" and set it to run on only one core. If this solves the problem, there is a program called ForceCore that you can download for free that will do this for you every time GW starts up (the ProgMan method is a one-shot cure - you have to do it every time you run GW)

its definetly the same annoying sound everytime. as to ur suggestion, i will give it a try. but, does this happen to all dual cores or just on some units. if there is a chance this wont happen if i exchange this unit for another, i think thats what ill do. thanks again

It's a very odd thing. It happens to some people all the time, and not at all to other people running exactly the same configuration. We have no idea what's going on with this and it's very frustrating. For the record, it runs just fine with all four of my cores enabled.

I know with my Quad, Phenom 9500 ( and I know at least the 9600 has the same issue), it suffers from a TLB issue (check google), so the 9550 and 9650 was made. Mine would shut off the computer in the middle of GW. I recently replaced the CPU with a 9850 and no problems now. My wife has never had an issue with her old dual core 4300 or with her new 6000 dual, so just never know.

I run a Q6700 quadcore with Vista 32. Every once in a blue moon I'll have GW crash with that same drumming noise. It's happened maybe twice. Even though GW is down, I can open up task manager and see that GW.exe is still running. I just end the process and it starts right back up again. But like I said, it's been rare.
