Hi.. I was wondering, is it possible to have two ISP's? One for my families three computers and one for just mine? And if so how would i go about it?

ISP means Internet Service Provider, exp, Comcast, AoL etc. etc.

They all take you to the same Internet, only difference is extra features that provide might have exp. Comcast has SpeedBoost on some, and another thing can be what type of lines they run in your area, Fiber optics etc. etc. You would never need two ISP's in one house hold. So i don't know what your trying to get at with your post.

Do you have seperate phonelines installed for your & ur parents' pc or something?

We don't have a large variety of ISP's to choose from... But I guess the speed comes in if you choose which type of connection you have: Shaped or Unshaped

As long as you are not on dial up............ if you have cable or DSL, getting a new cable just for you would be an overkill and an unnecessary expense for your parents.

I have cable, and 2 of us in my household play GW, have a bunch of things open, plus there is a teen that lives on Youtube..... and it works just fine.

Cable is faster than DSL, so if you have DSL switching to cable would be an improvement.

You can have two separate dialup isp's, but would need to add another phone line. Adding a second phone line is pretty simple, should be able to find some guides online. I doubt you can have two cable isp's. A cable company isn't going to let another company use their wiring, at least in the US.
OOPS just noticed you're in Wales, so might be different there. But in US cable ISP providers provide internet by areas. One apartment complex/housing division might get internet from Road Runner, but an apartment complex next to it might have to use Comcast.

Being from the dank depths of Cymru, you're pretty stuffed.

The options in Britain are, pretty much, cable or ADSL. With the usual case of ADSL, it's either BT or someone else (whoever you rent your phone line from.) With cable, it's pretty much Virgin.

The only way of doing what you're suggesting is to lease an entire new phone line - expensive and not very viable (they'd more than likely pair it with your existing line making both of them crap for broadband.)

Just stick with what you've got, or get your whole family to agree to switching to a faster provider - if there even is one in your area.

I think we all know what ISP stands for.. Also, yes - a select few people could need two internet connections in one household; one reason being if the rest of the internet users in your household saturate your down/upload transfer speeds by downloading there own things, streaming videos, etc.. While 1 user in the household may want there own dedicated internet connection for gaming (low pings) or having there own dedicated bandwidth so they have the full down/upload rates to themself.

Depends, if you go with a cable provider (Virgin Media) or LLU (Sky LLU, TalkTalk LLU, AOL LLU, etc) - LLU is basicly ISPs setting up and using there own networking equipment in exchanges instead of using BTs so they can provide dedicated and faster speeds, but still using ADSL your line is still limited..

Back on topic, i don't think having 2 ISPs running on the same line will help at all, im no expert but i think theres only so much information you can pass down a line in the first place, i dont even think its possible since the 2 devices you use to connect will interfere with eachother.

It would help if you said why you need 2 ISPs, there might be another way of solving your problem.

If you're worried about the other computers slowing your internet down when they're browsing, downloading, or whatever, then just get a router that can prioritize traffic. The Linksys WRT54GL is supposed to be a good one.

You can have 2 ISPs as long as they don't share the same medium (e.g. the same cable). You can have both ADSL and cable in one household. Atleast in my country (Belgium) you can, I've done so in the past.

Bloody expensive, though. I'm not even sure if it is possible in Britain - all the ISPs want you to have their telephone service too.

Tell me about, my current ISP was pretty annoying about that too. You just have to be consistent.

When I'm in the US (rural NYS) using DSL, one can get two separate ISPS if you really want to spend the money for it. Just tell your local provider that you want 2 lines run to your house, they may insist that you have 2 phone lines installed, but (hopefully) they won't charge you for two telephones if you only have one hooked up. Just be persistent and be willing to pay double or close to it.

I have younger brother that 17 and lives I mean LIVES on Myspace, constantly downloading music, keeps Limewire up 24/7 does photo and video editing, and god knows what all else and very rarely does something happen to my connection and if it does its a full blown fail from Comcast, or something server side on Anet. Having 2 ISP's in one household serves no purpose. Even Companies you one ISP with a server and hold several outgoing/ingoing lines and have no need for a second ISP. As it was suggested if you're using Dial-up upgrade, if your using DSL you're doing alright, and if you can convince your parents to upgrade to Cable then you should be running GW or any MMO perfectly fine assuming you have the proper PC specs. As for my ISP I pay for the household so I get the connection that I want.

2 phone lines is all you need. A different ISP to each number.. Easy.
