Default Ping problem

Hey! As you can read the title, my GW ping is always high,
ranging from 400-900. It has been like this ever since i purchaced GW 3 years ago. I live in South Africa and i have a 512k modem.

Is there anyway to reduce the the ping?
thanx

What is your connection speed from your Internet provider? I am assuming it is 512K which is the high-end for your connection. (Modems will go faster) Is it possible for you to increase to 1.5 Meg or 3.5 Meg connection? It will always cost more to get a faster connection. I use to run a low connection speed cable modem 256K (I think) it was only $18.00 a month and I was happy for a year. I then moved and the new local provider offered only 3.5 Meg as the lowest I almost soiled myself at the difference in speed.

Other things that you can do that make a difference in performance is make sure your machine is running good. It makes a big difference in performance and game play. Do you have enough RAM? Do you have a separate graphics card or is it Motherboard based. Separate graphic cards let your system breath a little more, and free up a lot of resources being used for graphics. Adding a separate card will reduce your system lag and speed up processing on your machine. Do you have a virus clean system? Malware targets connections by spamming its own junk thru them. This will slow down any computer.

Good luck to you

Technically, a modem cannot run at 512k, since the maximum speed achievable by a phone line (theoretically) is 56k. If you're using dsl/cable, then it's not really a modem.

The reason I mention this is because I wonder if the OP mistyped when he put 512k, when he meant 56k, in which case he's using dial-up, which is possibly the bottleneck.

So which is it?

Or it could be that the OP's physical location is about as far away from any GW servers as its possible to get.

Yeah. I play on ~300-600 ping, and it's due to location.

I am also from south africa, as is my alliance, and all our pings are about in the region that you mentioned. Ask your isp about "unshaped" bandwith, i heard of south africans getting 200ms pings with that. The things is that the isp gives priority to the ports that websites uses and limits the gaming ports, but with unshaped there are no limits on your ports. Also try playing on european servers, i believe they are closer to us.

European servers are the closest to you. They have a server in Germany, which is connected to the general database in America. You can see the worldwide cable layout here.
