what brand of ram? and how many ram sticks are in the computer.

448 is a odd number

Ram normaly comes in 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024 or 1 gig etc.

that number seems like you have mixed ram sizes like a 256 with a 128 and a 64 or something crazy like that. This is something that will cause computer problems you should not mix different ram sizes (Ex: a 512 card mixed with a 256 to make 768) it does cause system conflicts.

hope this helps, if you want to give a little more info that would help us help you.
My guess is that he has one stick of 512 and that where ever he is looking is only reporting 448. Maybe the missing 64 meg is being used by system resources and not being reported. I'm sure he didn't buy it with 256+128+64 and he hasn't said anything about adding ram in any of his posts, just adding a gfx card.

Maybe that "helpful" neighbour helped himself to the RAM and the graphics card and stuck a load of crap in its place...

Eye ball, can I ask you WHERE you bought that PC? £1200 is a hell of a lot for a system with the specifications you've provided so far. The only good part is the 22" monitor - I'm surprised that set-up can even display at 1680x1050.

When you do that "right-click on My Computer" thing I told you about, it should have the manufacturer details under the General tab. Even telling me what name is written on the front of the case would be a help.

By the way, I'm on BTInternet too and they've been very reliable over the years - certainly no problems with GW. Of course, it is dependent on how close you are to the telephone exchange and what package your dad got from BT - they vary from 512Kb to ~8Mb.

I'm taking a personal interest in this case - it really bothers me for some reason :|

I don't blame you... I think he got scammed big time. For 1200 pounds, he should have a screaming rig, and instead it's barely a stripped down econobox with outdated parts.

Just Curious... when did you buy the comp?

For the record, we're talking ~US$2,500 here...

I am gonna agree it does sound like his neighbor bought the parts for his computer and gave him the old one.

and yes for 1200 pounds you should have a super sweet computer.

keep posting Eye ball we need a little more information to figure out whats going on with it.

You should take everyones advice about not using your neighbor again to buy computer parts.

Since he tells you he is a computer tech he should have known that video card sucks as well as get you a better deal on a cheaper rig.

Ok, enough talk about how your computer's been nobbled - let's find out exactly what you've got and what's the best thing to do.

Remember that CPU-Z program I told you about? Download it from this link: http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_145.zip

I want you to unzip that, then run it. It finds out everything about your computer. On the little window, there are 6 tabs - CPU, Cache, Mainboard, Memory, SPD and About. It's the last tab I want you to click - About.

On the bottom of that there are 3 buttons - I want you to click the one that says Registers dump (.txt). This will generate a text file - give it a name and save it.

Then you can either copy-and-paste the entire contents of that text file into a new post in this thread, or you can send it to me as an email attachment - I Pm'd you my address.

yeah could you post it please? I am really curious on what he actually got for $2.4k US, for that kinda cash his PC should be a beast, especially if it was home-built.

Also have you tried running gw.exe on just one core? Guild Wars likes to run on just 1. This can be done is the task-manager.

When I first got my computer I had the same problems.
Of course, I got a Dell and that was probably 90% of it.

Ive been running GW fine for about 2 years now since i upgraded the on-board chipset to an ATI Radeon 9250.

Eye Ball, If your problem isnt fixed yet, I strongly suggest walking into your local electronics store, and asking for a new stick of RAM.

The extra memory fixed all of the lag/choppy gameplay issues that the vid card did not.

Just don't buy a dell
