Default Quick question.

So... I'm sure you all know of that pain the arse Recycle Bin on Windows XP that you for some odd reason can't remove.

Does anyone know a way to get rid of it? On Vista you can just delete it away, but I made a copy of it in another folder so I wouldn't lose track of it.

Why would you remove it..?
Can't see how it can bother much.

Can't remember exactly, but it's just a case of right-clicking on the desktop and choosing properties, then finding the right tab. This is the option in Vista - the XP one looks pretty much the same - just deselect that which you don't use.

Open Registry Editor.

In Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

Find the following key: {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and delete it.

WARNING: As always, before making changes to your registry you should always make sure you have a valid backup. In cases where you're supposed to delete or modify keys or values from the registry it is possible to first export that key or value(s) to a .REG file before performing the changes.

Close Registry Editor and there is no need to reboot. Just wait a few seconds and see how the icon disappears from the desktop.

How is it a pain in the ass? I mean it's just sitting there, a little icon just waiting for you to delete something.

Try it. Find out. Delete the recycle bin in XP. I triple dog dare you Ryker. Click it and press Delete. Or better yet, press Shift + Delete. See what XP says.

I want to remove it because I like a clean desktop.

That is on my second computer, that icon has been making me annoyed for so long - but this computer also has XP (which I don't use much) and I want to remove it from there too, I found that registry edit way.. but I was kind of trying to avoid messing with it.

Tis the only way. XP isn't as user friendly as Vista in some cases.

I believe you could remove it through the Microsoft Management Console.

Go to Start > Run > Type "MMC" > Bash the Enter key > hit CRTL + M > hit "Add" > select "Group Policy Object Editor > click "Add" again > hit Finish once the window pops up.

Then move back to the MMC.

Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Click "Desktop" > double click "Remove Recycle Bin icon from desktop" > click the "Enabled" option > hit "Ok" and then relog onto Windows.

And we're done.

I mean, I can always go and tell it to not show desktop icons, that works fine and all.. but I save practically everything to my desktop for quick access, so this is not Ideal. I hate having to pick a folder and go click through things.

But I guess if editing the registry is the only way, and I don't feel comfortable doing that, then this may be my only easy solution.

Hmm, that might work. I no longer run XP on either of my machines, so I can't try it.

PS: I have my Klipsch speakers so high, a picture frame just fell off the wall. LOL?

I personally removed the functionality:

right-click on the bin, check the corresponding option (2nd one) and make sure the checkbox at the bottom (confirmation dialog) is checked also.

Only do that when you feel ready for this big change. Deleting will mean deleting (well you can always try recover tools, but in 5 years I never had to).

Thanks for all of your suggestions, it helps a lot. I am probably going to use disabling icons on my other computer as a quick fix for now.

But when I get onto my XP install for this machine, I will most likely try to tweak with the registry or try Alexandra's suggestion, I don't quite want to remove the functionality Fril, but thank you!

Are you trying to remove the recycle bin from the desktop?

1.) Right click on the desktop
2.) Click Personalize
3.) On the left hand side under Tasks, click Desktop Icons
4.) Unclick the ones you don't want.

*Edit*
Never mind, you want to do it for XP.

Just use Tweak UI. Under Desktop uncheck Recycle Bin.

Brilliant, that is the kind of thing I was looking for.

I will give it a shot.

From Wiki:
Quote:
Tweak UI is a free user interface customization application first released by Microsoft in 1996 to aid end users in customizing the Microsoft Windows operating system. By itself, it does not do anything that would not otherwise be possible. However, it provides a simple graphical user interface for performing tweaks that otherwise would require editing the registry, which is considered by many a daunting and risky task for novice users. Tweak UI is a free download from Microsoft's website, and is one of many non-supported PowerToys released by Microsoft.
Seems legit. Hopefully more people will be helped by this.

Yep, it's a Microsoft Powertoy. Works just fine for little under the hood changes, and doing them through a GUI is usually much safer.

You could have just PMed me instead of going off-topic, but I will respond here so others may know as well.

The "unofficial" Wiki has gone downhill ever since it joined Wikia (a collection of Wikis)

Wikia has the most !@#$iest servers known to mankind, most unfriendly Wiki layouts and an even more retarted search feature. So all those hardcore Wiki lovers to go the official Wiki instead, hence the reason the unofficial Wiki should be considered dead beyond revival.
