Your AV and Firewall shouldn't really be making much of a difference. What are you using?

Keep your firewall on, but the AV can go off.

The firewall is absolutely needed, not having it on is the equivilent of leaving the doors to your house open. Anti Virus on the other hand is more like hiring a private security team. Its really expensive and only really is worthwhile while browsing the web and such. Make sure to run a manual scan once a week and you are fine. Also tell us what AV you are using, some are really, really bad at sucking the life out of your computer, the good ones have little noticeable effect.

I haven't tried kaspersky myself, but from what I have heard it isn't a slouch. Just having it on shouldn't reduce performance much if it all, if you are noticing a large performance drop from it being on its more likely that you have it configured to automatically scan your system in the background. If thats the case turn off 'scheduled scanning' or 'background scanning' or something like that and remember to run the scans manually when you are doing less resource intensive activities.

Running an AV while gaming has little to no effect at all now-a-days. Back on the 9x kernel you'd need to disable a lot, but not with the NT kernel.

Yes, you can turn them off, but I doubt you'd see any real increase in system performance - they don't usually use much system resources when they're idling in the background. (Except maybe, if it's Norton AV - that seems to get it's little fingers into everything and cause all sorts of headaches.)

Anyway, try turning off the AV first, then the firewall. Turn them back on if you don't see an improvement.
