Default New Router --> Failing Ventrilo.

Ever since I got this Siemens ADSL SL2-141 router my vent is causing problems, it doesn't connect to most servers and if it does then it is with monstrous ping and usually disconnects after a short time.
According to ventrilo FAQ, if this happens then a firewall or a router blocks the connection, and since I'm not using any firewall I guess this is something with the router.
Help?

Thanks in advance.

Turn the router over and you should see the user name, password and the router address. Go in and turn off the firewall inside the router, also you might need to open the port and allow vent to get through.

turning off the internal firewall doesn't help, and I don't understand how to open ports, I do what the manual says and it does nothing. What am I supposed to type in the port opening screen?

Try a firmware update for the router. Also, enable DMZ mode on your router. That will ensure that all ports are being forwarded correctly.

DMZ just puts you outside of the routers functions and such.

shoogi,
What port does your Ventrilo need to connect to?

I'm betting it's the Windows firewall. What Windows are you running?

I've never had router problems with Ventrilo - never needed to open ports - nor did anyone I know.

I'd go along with Tarun - if you are running Windows Firewall, make sure Ventrilo.exe is on the allow list (or not on the block list - whatever applies)

But then again, I've never used that brand of router, and/or the router could be bad. I assume you've done the obvious and reset the router.... (check the documentation, sometimes there's a soft and a hard reset - go hard.)

Yep, I indeed fail at computers, but I do know that I should disable the windows' firewall...

Quaker- resetting means turning off the router and turning it on again? :X

DMZ doesn't help too, probably not a router problem. Ideas?

Not necessarily - routers are designed to maintain their settings during a power outage, so merely turning them off and on is usually just a "soft" reset which clears buffers etc. You may need to check the documentation to see if there's a way to reset back to default settings. For example, one Linksys router I had, had a reset button on the front which had to be held for a certain period of time to completely clear the settings.

I gave my old router a try, and vent works with that, so it is apparentely a router issue. So now I switch routers every time I go HA? bleh

edit- after conducting the above experiment, I reconnected the new router and now vent is fine. Go figure. So-
Problem solved by replugging the router.
Thanks to all those who posted, your help is greatly appreciated.
