Get word, no doubt.
I had the same opportunity, took it, and i'll do it again if such an offer was given to me.
It's very easy to use, has a LOT of features, you'll love it.
OpenOffice is free and all but really, it is far from being such user friendly.

The biggest problem is that non 2k7 files cannot use the best features of word 2007. You basically have a better looking word 2003 when opening a non docx file...
So if your uni does not have 2k7, you'llmaybe have some troubles working on/from one of their PC

I would not worry with vista tho if you're not sure your pc will handle it. Google desktop will get you the quick drive search'n'launch feature, that's basically it.

Talked to one of my friends last night, serious techie type.

We did the Vista advisor, said my comp was fine for it.

it has 1 GB ram, so I'm going to buy another gig or two, then back up my itunes and install vista.

Hopefully all goes well and I'll have vista by ~friday

The big thing is what type of graphics card you have. Vista will put a big hit on video acceleration and rendering.

Hopefully you are getting 64bit business or Ultimate versions. Home is worthless.

Office 2007 is fantastic! It takes a great deal of effort initially to 'get' the new ribbon system, but it is totally worth it. I don't miss digging around in menus/submenus looking for a feature I'm only mildly sure exists at all.

I use Vista everyday as my primary OS, and after the learning curve, have really enjoyed my experience.

Business. The only hiccup was that it didn't have any info on SigmaTel, which is my audio

Yeah if it says you can run Business you can run pretty much any flavor. You'll love it.

dvd rom
a decent dx 10 graphics card

This is my suggestion not m$. M$ is probably lower req but I know you want to run it "pretty".

Good luck.
Those specs are a little bit silly, i've run Vista Ultimate on a stock A64 3500+ @ 2.2Ghz and 1gb ram and an x550 very easily.

I'm running Vista 64bit, and my biggest gripe against it is the Windows Defender asking me if I want to run a program every time I click on it. If anyone knows how to turn that off, please oblige me. Otherwise, Vista has been good to me I suppose. I run this system:

PSU: 900W
Processor: Intel Core Duo E7200 2.53GHz
Motherboard: EVGA 780i
DRAM: Corsair 4GB DDR2
GFX Card: GeForce 8800 GT x2(SLI)
HDD: .5TB

Fallout 3, CoD4, GW, Company of Heroes all run great. I'm kind of jealous of you for being able to get Office 2007 for free from your college, I just get Vista Business Edition for free.

do not get vista. vista is by far the worst decision i've ever made. i've had a few dels and they were awesome compared to vista. vista has so many problems. it has almost no customizable features. it's not a good idea to get vista.

^^^ why are you comparing Dell to Vista??? One is a manufacturer, one is an software.... btw, you can customize Vista too.

ps I dislike Vista when compared to XP in almost all areas - but it's not "totally" bad, some people do actually like it.

i switched to Windows Vista Ultimate X64 from Windows XP Professional x64
and i do not regret it.

i also got the entire microsoft office professional plus pack, its not that much better then 2003 but i do like it better

btw if your saying that word 2007 saves as .docx extension is a downpart.. you can save as .doc for compatability with word 98-2003

@jecht windows defender is not doing this. go to the users window and look for UAC and turn that off .

This upset alot of people that did not understand that vista has stricter software requirements and it is more secure.
Laughed when I read that. Thank you, the first laugh of the day is always the best.

The only smart thing about prefetching is how they managed to sneak it in. Prefetching is just dumb. For those that do not know what prefetching is, simply put it is two separate things. You have Superfetch, and you have ReadyBoost. What they do is load up all of your memory with programs that the computer thinks you might want to lauch.

Sounds great, well, theory and practice are not the same.

well, vista DID manage to load GW about 6 times faster than my current XP 64bit, so prefetch was obviously working.

anyways, any modern computer can easily handle vista, higher requirements or not. unless you have specific applications that won't work with it, or just want to try something else for shits and giggles, there's no reason in NOT getting vista.
