Default copying GW.dat

so i finally got my new computer up and running and instead of doing a -image, would it be possible to just put the gw.dat file from my old computer onto my ipod/flash drive and transfer it to my new computer?

Bare in mind that im going from XP->Vista, and im not sure it could cause any problems.

Anyway thanks for any input.
