GW has to run in Windows. (AFAIK)

If it's a newer Intel based Mac, you can run Windows XP or Vista natively via Bootcamp. GW runs just fine that way.

Or you can use aa app like "Crossover" (as Faure mentioned). I'm not sure what the performance is like in that case, but probably still good.

If it's an older Mac, or you don't want to spring for Windows, you can run GW under a Windows emulator, but the performance will suck.

yeah, i'm running it on xp via bootcamp. 2.16ghz, 2gb ram, 950GMA. and i get 30fps, sometimes 60. my friend tried it on crossover, but it ran at like 10fps. so i wouldn't bother with that.

I don't know why it wouldn't run if you dual booted with Windows.

Think this has been answered before, and dont see why not. I thought it was possible to dwnload a version of gw that works on macs but i could be wrong.

get bootcamp. im on my mac and running guildwars as we speak. runs perfectly even on highest graphics settings, and im only on the 2.4gig macbook (NOT macbook pro*)

100$ for windows xp installation disk was worth every penny

I am not the most technically minded, hence my need for one you lot answer this question.

I have recently moved into a small place with my girlfriend. While that is a good thing it has had a negative impact on gaming. Apparently a 24 year old should be spending his time on something more productive...

Anyway I have a PC desktop that apparently will not suit are flat (no I’m not kidding its too big, monitor isn’t pretty enough etc…). I was going to upgrade my PC anyway and the fact that I now need to justify using up space in our flat I’ve decided to get a laptop.

Firstly how will guildwars play, look and feel on a laptop? And can you recommend anything?

Secondly I’ve seen that the new Mac laptops that have come out have much better graphics cards. It is also my understanding that you can install windows on a Mac. Therefore would I be able to run guildwars well on one of the new macs?

how well GW runs on a laptop depends almost entirely on the laptop graphic chip, as well as the screen resolution of the laptop screen. if you want to have a comprehensive list of laptop graphics, go here:

that site lists just about every laptop graphic solutions available. just check the device you are considering on that list and compare them.

and yes, the new macbook pro does have a pretty decent graphic chip and will be able to run GW just fine if you install windows. their screen resolution is limited to 1440x900, which is just about the limit of the geforce 9600M GT that's on them.

GW on a laptop is fine as long as you get a decent-ish GPU. Nothing less then a 8400 is advisable. An 8400 can run GW with just about everything maxed out. Now if you inted on playing new games, you really need to look at getting an 8700 or higher for a 17" or a 8600 for a 15".

CPU plays it part too, nothing less then a Core 2 Duo @ 2GHz, ideally 2.5 and above.

15" - [email protected]+, 2GB RAM, 8400+, choice of OS, 100gb+ HDD, ideally 1440x900 res

17" - [email protected]+, 2GB RAM, 8700+, choice of OS, 100gb+ HDD, ideally 1680x1050 res

GW will run on much lower specs, but the ones I listed above would see you get reasonable performance from most games for another year. High end visual games like Crysis etc won't run on these very well/at all. You'll need to spend a few thousand to get a proper gaming notebook.

The new 9xxx series is out, but they're not that much of a step up from the 8xxx series.

You will be able to run GW on them, you can install Windows thanks to Boot Camp, having a native windows installation.
I have my guild leader normally playing GW on her 15" Dell laptop, which can be compared with Macs for hardware specs, never told me about any particular issue, maybe you can have some problems if you go with a 13" Macbook, not with the resolution but mainly with the size of the screen..

I have always played GW on my laptop and have never had a problem. My desktop is very old and does not have a good monitor at all, so I find it better to play on my laptop. Here are the specs for my laptop:

I have the resolution set to 1920x1200 which is the highest setting and I have never had a problem with GW running slow (other than occasionally the common lag which everyone experiences from time to time).

As my screen is a 15.4 in, the 1920x1200 resolution is great, I am able to fit everything on my screen at the same time while still having ample room to see what is going on. The laptop is now 2 1/2 years old, but it is still working great.

Also I should mention that I have the graphics settings at almost the highest settings, but my comp cannot handle the anti-aliasing, so that is turned off. I also have the sound quality sett nearly as low as it can go, seeing as how I rarely listen to the game. (I try to still keep up a conversation with my wife while playing, so that I am not totally excluding her from my life)

that's a really high resolution for that graphic chip to push. if my research is correct, it's essentially a geforce 7400go, which is a pretty slow chip overall.

i don't know if bootcamp allows you to completely erase mac osx or not. if that's possible, i would just completely wipe mac osx and just install win xp.

Crossover Games!!!

I play GW through Mac OS X daily. Works great.

The bottom line is that Macs are pricey compared to most Windows laptops of comparable specs, although there are lots of pricey Windows laptops too. If you mostly do gaming, you could get a lot better performance for the money. (And get two buttons on the touchpad.

there are other emulators beside virtual pc that maybe works better like wmware and crossover ?

Anyway they have been around worked long before virtualpc.

Has anyone tried them with max os x and guildwars ?

Of course with a new intel mac guildwars works fine if u install windows xp on the mac but sometimes u do not want to reboot but u want to stay in the mac enviroment for safety or to avoid windows crashes or...
