Default weird ventrilo problem

my pc was working fine, i then got some virus/malware that even screwed my pc up in safe mode, so i reinstalled xp. i couldnt find my motherboard drivers disk so redownloaded them from the manufacturers website.

everything works ok on my pc now except ventrilo.

i can hear people when i plug in my monitors speakers and they can hear me through my mic
but when i plug my headset in i cant hear people anymore although i can hear in game sounds, music, and ventrilo beeps etc

i cant understand how this can be possable ?, any ideas ?

The only thing I can think of at the moment is to go to the Ventrilo setup and make sure the Output Device is set to "Default Direct Sound device".
