make sure you have the latest version of DirectX from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...a-9b6652cd92a3

If the games work without the need to install DirectX/you have the latest version, to disable Windows Logo checking do this:

1) Right-click My Computer.
2) Click Properties.
3) Click the Hardware tab, then click Driver Signing under Drivers.
4) Click Ignore – Install the software anyway and don’t ask for my approval.

Is the version of DirectX that you're trying to install, compatible with Windows XP? Or, does the game say it requires DirectX 10? What game is it?

Is you Windows XP up to date?

Enable and run Windows Update and then try reinstalling the game. If that doesn't work then the error is being caused by either:

A) Cryptographic Services is disabled.
B) Database or log file corruption in %Systemroot%\System32\Catroot2.
C) Windows files are missing or damaged.

to fix (You will need to be logged into an Administrator account):

01. Right-click My Computer and press Manage.

02. Expand Services and Applications.

03. Double-click Services.

04. In the list, find and Double-click 'Cryptographic Services'.

05. Make sure that the Startup Type is set to Automatic and that the service is started. If not, set it, press Apply and OK. Shutdown and restart Windows XP and retry the update.

06. If the install still fails, open a CMD.EXE prompt (hold down the Windows Key and press R then in the dialog box which appears enter: cmd.exe and hit enter) and type:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

07. Exit the CMD prompt and retry the installation. If it succeeds, exit this procedure, if it fails continue to step 8.

08. Open a CMD.EXE prompt and type:

sfc /purgecache

When you receive Windows File Protection successfully made the requested change, type:

sfc /scannow

09. When the command completes, try your install. If it succeeds, exit this procedure, otherwise continue to step 10.

10. Perform an in-place upgrade of Windows XP (see: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for info)

11. Reinstall your latest Service Pack, hotfixes, and updates.
