Default Extremely Laggy Game

I just wanted to know if there is something wrong with my computer or is my harware just not up to par for Guildwars. I do remember being able to play it fine before but now i cant get a fps over 10. My ping does range from like 50-2k at times but even when its good i generally do not get an acceptable fps.

i am running Windows Vista
2 GB RAM
Intel GMA 950 graphics
1.73 GHz Pentium Dual Core processor
running the game on the lowest setting, full screen 800x600 doesent seem to make the game run faster than if it was ran in default settings

yeah, upgrade your video card - as for ping, don't have downloads going and all that stuff, if it's still bad take it up with your ISP.

its a laptop so i cant replace the integrated

and thanks for telling me its crap =), but is it crap to the point where it cant play guild wrs even in the lowest settings? intel's site says it "supports" guild wars so not sure to what extent that means (plays without crashing?) but yeah

yeah i would have to guess that your all outta luck, i'm not pro with computers but i know a little bit, and the card seems to be your issue - but try running it in windowed mode, everything on low settings.
and talk to your ISP about the ping.

i have tried the lowest settings, ive completely turned off windows aero, and other stuff that could potentially screw up the performance (i think)

the thing is the game used to work fine on my laptop but doesent anymore and i was wondering if there is anything that i could have potentially changed. I dont think its any software problem but potentailly hardware settings?

Thats your best bet why you probably have low FPS. Friends of mine that run FPS games on Vista tell me that they get the same problem you do. I personally wouldn't touch Vista till it is 99.99% bug and error free.

And for your ping; If your problem is persistent I too would suggest to contact your ISP and discuss it with them. Mostly likley you don't have enough bandwith or its something to do with your packet flow.

windows vista use all graphic solutions differently than windows XP. unfortunately, this greatly lowers the performance of the intel GMAs.

fortunately, vista is pretty epically awesome for mid to high end computers.

Had an old computer running the game however due to low fps the ping was very high. For better results I suggest getting a better videocard as most onboard ones aren't really designed for games.

Question: What kind of internet connection do you have and what speed?

your fps will never affect your ping. your ping will RARELY affect your fps.

fps is determined by computer hardware. ping is determined by internet connection speed/quality. unless your computer is really old (as in 8+ years old), the two won't affect each other. and even if you do have an 8+ years old computer, you won't be able to play GW anyways.

a unique thing is that my fps is goof for about the first 30 seconds to minute, then it starts tanking downward

I have a similar issue with Vista, but mine is on any graphical changes, GW framerate tanks. I still haven't figured out how to fix it, so I guess you are stuck.

And to the OP:

No, the Intel GMA 950 will not run GW well at all. Hell, it won't anything very well.

I wonder when intel will stop to put its "integrated graphic solution" on his motherboards...integrated graphic cards are really killing pc gaming

Integrated graphics are added to systems or motherboards that aren't intended to be running games or any 3d programs at all. The problem is due to a combination of novice computer users and the marketing of computer selling companies leading people to believe the graphics will handle anything more than operating your 2d GUI. The market for those running video games or 3d software on their computer is also very small compared to the rest of the user base.

Your computer is fine it is NOT your laptop. it is the internet Connection. Same as mine. Happened to me 3 days after I got my brand new Dell. My Dell had NOTHING on it. I installed Firewall, internet security, anti virus, firefox and guild wars. That is all that is on my puter. When I set it up my ping was 95ms. Three days later 18,000 ping and after another 2 days it was 75ms.

After my laptop came with the wireless router and playing 2 accounts on the wireless my ping is 75ms. Then last night my ping rose again to 14,500. So just wait 2 days and try again. My internet is CABLE N type so I am Fast city when it works. It will be interesting to see how fast I am after the changes this time.

Who knows lightning might have struck something and blew it up. Have patience. Your lap top seems to be KEWL enough.

His laptop might be fine, but his vidcard is not.

Most laptops come with integrated video (Far cheaper, brings down cost) and integrated video is horrible for gaming.

His ping has nothing to do with his fps, which is what was asked in his post. High latency may cause anomolies like rubberbanding and simply game lag, but not poor fps. That is entirely videocard/system related.

I thought this was a thread about lag (latency) so i stopped by to offer advice, but after reading the posts, I can see it is about choppiness and low frame-rates. I don't know who started calling "choppiness" or "low frame-rates" lag, but they need to be beaten because it is the cause of a lot of confusion for techs like myself. I mean you get a call and somebody is whining about lag and after an hour you figure out they mean a bad frame-rate...

Anyway, you can play with some integrated chips. My laptop has a built-in ATI graphics chip, an 1100 series. I have to run the game in a low resolution, but it is playable on it if I feel the need to game on that laptop.

What the OP can do to make the game playable on his setup is turning off AA, turning down all the detail levels, and running in 800x600 or maybe 1024x768. Turn off all the extras! This helps immensely when using a built-in chipset. My laptop has everything turned off and I can maintain 30fps in 1024x768 in most areas, with towns like LA dipping to 20fps due to the hordes of players.
