Angry Graphics Driver Failure...?

D:<

Ok. I'm crappy at explaining things so if this doesn't make much sense... well, you know why.

My graphics (which is build into my motherboard) is a piece of crap, but it has never, ever failed me. I can play Guild Wars at the highest graphics setting with only a minimal amount of lag... so long as I don't go into a town with a ton of people in it. Either way, I play on the lowest possible settings so that I don't lag at all... again, except if I go into a town with a ton of people.

But that's how it is with a lot of people... so whatever. Blame the GW servers if you must.

Long story short: I just completed the Nightfall Mission "Moddok Crevice" (The Hunger is a pain in the butt, thank you very much), I watch the boring little video... and BLAMO! The game has a freaking fit! "Graphics Driver Failure"... So I follow the things on the support page... get the latest drivers, reinstall etc etc... No luck whatsoever. Fun eh?

So I run the game... try and log onto that character. Crash. Try again a few more times. Crash. Crash Crash. 50% of the time it doesn't even show the character's armor on the character select screen. And the funny part: I can log on to every other character I have with absolutely no problems!

So... anyone else ever have this issue? If so: how the bloody hell did you fix it?

(PS. I don't get paid enough to get a brand new freaking computer)

Alright... well, what is the Integrated graphics chip that you have? Or in fact what is all of the specs of your computer? CPU, Operating system, Graphics card, etc.

Some integrated graphics cards, or older graphics cards can have problems playing Nightfall and Eye of the North. They do not support necessary features for running these games and eventually it will glitch up and crash (mainly Intel graphics chips). You shouldn't have any problems with Prophecies or Factions though.

That's kind of why I believe that this is your problem, you log in on other characters that aren't in a problem area, or some such, and it's fine.

The lag part, there is two kinds of. There is lag as in bad ping (Improperly configured network on your side or A-Net's laggy servers, and then hardware lag from having a crappy computer (Low FPS, and slowness mainly), and the difference is noticeable.

Anyway, specs would help.

When I can get back on my computer that I play GW with, I'll post some specs for it. I do know, however, that it is an Intel graphics chip. So far it's only been that one spot that its happened (although I haven't gotten far in EotN or NF yet).

Is there anything I can do, other than using another computer, to get my character out of that area (at least until I get a new comp, which could take ages...)?

The lagg I get is probably just from having a crappy computer, even though it only seems to lagg in towns and when first beginning AB or RA. I don't really mind that though, just that I can't access the character I've been working on.

Use a different computer or have a friend get on and change towns,'till you get another computer.
If you trust a random person i could get it out i guess.

Ah, alright. If it is an Intel chip then this is your problem, they don't play well with EoTN or NF, and this has been going on for a very long time and happens quite a bit with these chips. It doesn't happen in every place or every time though apparently, but I do know that in Rata Sum (EoTN) it typically goes bonkers there.

I guess the only thing you can do is either: log in from another computer and move the character yourself, have a friend log into your account and do it for you (I personally don't trust people to do that), or you can contact PlayNC support and tell them that you're stuck, and they will move your character to a safe place for you.

If you have the option to upgrade to a better graphics card, aka a PCI-Expressx16 slot, then you could probably get a nice newer card that would play GW really well, or you can just buy a PCI slot graphics card, which is better than the Intel chips but doesn't offer a whole lot. Or you could just buy a whole new computer. :P

I also believe there is a program to disable some things on the graphics chip that make it crash, so that you can play stable. But I'll have to search that up since I don't remember what it is, I think that moriz, another tech knows though.

PS: Don't trust random people with your account info, ever! Sorry wind. :P

Thanks to everyone who replied. I found an old thread using that very useful "Similar Threads" box down at the very bottom of the screen that helped me fix the problem.

Brianna: I know not to give my info out :P Even though I don't have a lot on the acc, I don't want to spend another 3 hours trying to get Dwayna's Grace XD

No DO NOT Buy a new computer. i have this EXACT SAME PROBLEM. A friend invited me to CoF run. I went and never came back. The first screen did not open and I had 2 GW clients running at the same time.

When I closed both windows and went back to my MAIN Toon I was there to select but my toon was naked. I needed my wife to hop on her lap top and get me out of there.

Now my old 6 year old that is computer worked Fine. Vista is CRAP the drivers are CRAP. How can you tell me that a computer that is brand new with a new video card can not do the same things that my really old computer could do. Vista is junk. Vista is junk. Vista is crappy junk wipe it and put on Windows Mel or something else. let me say again. Vista is junky crap that never should have made it on my dell. I write an e-mail a day to Dell. I have written them so much that they delete my e-mails and never send a response any more.

My driver is Brand new. So new that when I loaded the "so called new drivers" my whole screen started to flash like a strobe light. If I was apaletick I would have had a seigure and died. I had to delete my driver and reboot ro find the old driver and that still did not take care of it.

I can not get to the underword or CoF or even the Central Transfer station to put my Cloths of the brotherhood on my hero's to put them in my hall. Vista is Crap.

You can put a new card in all you want but then Vista has to run it. Your lags are caused by Vista. Vista Lags stuff that is proven. Vista is shite

I hate vista and I want to find the bugger that did this and let him know that they are stupid dumbbutts and wreaked my beloved Guild Wars and that is the last time that I will buy a Dell with Vista Crap on it. I want my Widows 98 back. That worked the best. no lags video cards were fine even the updates worked good.

And WHERE IS NORTON. why did that not take off. Norton was great too.

Is there a way to run GW from the dos prompt? Now that would be sick.

post your system specs.

I, and quite a few others run vista and Ummm....it isn't crap, a hog, yes, crap, naw, not really. people tend to bash vista, but in reality, it's their hardware that is to blame.

not to mention, a full GW installation won't even work on win98. win98 still uses the FAT32 file system, which can only handle a maximum file size of around 3.4gb (?). this means that the full GW.dat file at 3.7gb will have some serious problems on a win98 installation.

I have Windows XP and it's using FAT32. It's only Windows 95 and 98 (and possible 2000 and ME, but I've never used them) that have that problem.

@@iamnotyourmother: Vista takes up a ton of memory (because of the way it manages things). So if you don't have 1gb+ RAM I suggest you go out and get a copy of Windows XP Home, or you'll have 101 problems with running games. (at least until they come up with an update to fix that problem)

You don't say what your new video "card" is. If it's still Intel integrated graphics, it won't matter what OS you use. Intel has yet to make an "Integrated Graphics Solution" that isn't crap (for games).

Stop being a poster boy for iMac - not everything is a Vista problem.

Some areas do that crap for me, I figured out how to solve it though.

Play on full screen.
On character select screen, pick the character.
Press enter and minimize.
Wait 10 seconds and maximize.
???
Profit.
