Default Lag/gfx problem

I'm not a computer whiz. All i know is i got 1 gig of ram, XP, and i run anti spyware/virus/defrag and all that.

Usually, Guild Wars works fine. But once a week or so, if im logged on for 2 hours or more, i get the White Screen of Death, along with his good pal, Mr 1 Frame per 7 Seconds. >_>

Before you ask, i do NOT know what graphics card i have, and I do not know how to check. If you think/know that this is my problem, please tell me, and I'll do my best to figure out how.

Thanks

Probably your graphics card is busted. Or GW.dat is broken. Try reinstalling GW, if that's not the problem, update graphic drivers. If that won't, reinstall XP. If that... it means your Graphic Card is a pile of junk that you can throw out and buy a new one.

But come on, I thought anyone had computer studies on which he could learn something about his PC? I mean... come on.

P.S. This is >NOT< Texmod related problem. Also, shrinking and re-opening does not correct the problem. Only way i can get rid of this is to close guild wars completely, and then re-open it.

certainly doesn't look pleasant.

Right clicking on My Computer and then selecting properties gets you basic system information and you can go to start accessories system tools to find more info.
Here is a short movie on youtube that shows you step by step.

Could just be an overheating problem, if your graphics card has its own fan and that is wearing out or clogged with dust you would get graphics errors.
a sign of that would be strange noises or a general increase of noise from the computer as the fan struggles or rattles on its bearings.

Try to narrow down the possible causes
Do you have similar problems with other games when your online ?

Can you close and restart GW to solve the problem or is a reboot needed ?

one thing is certain you are not the first person to have this happen to so a direct search on the internet is likely to come up with a few ideas.

edit updating drivers in windows xp
easier to post a link than type it all out

You say it only happens once a week? have you checked to see if your computer is running a weekly anti virus scan when these problems occur? i used to get terrible lag during virus scans on my last computer, just an idea.

well, 2 things jumped out at me right away. 1. you said roughly once a week. 2. you said after being logged on for about 2 hours.

if i had to venture a guess this sounds like a cooling issue. first thing id do is open the case and clean that bad boy out really good. update drivers if needed. re-in stall GW again only if needed.

seems the guys above me were spot on. but i really think this is a heat issue.

Same thing happens to my computer (only graphics corruption is not that bad) if I let my graphics card overheat during the game.

Measure your graphics temp when that happens... and when it doesn't, then check what's the normal temperature for your card. Also check the graphics configuring you have (F11) and possibly use lowest setting when you are in a big map (one example comes to mind: AB).
Check if the fans in the computer work correctly... if everything is alright and it still overheats (if that's the issue), you could try installing another fan (or get someone else to do it). Don't forget that it can still be a faulty graphics card though.

You can find most stuff by doing Google search for what you need.

Also, if exiting game helps, then try hiding/minimizing the game window and then maximizing it back. Mapping will probably help too, but less helpful if you actually want to continue playing the area.

Birthday + Christmas = new computer

There are several factors that could be attributing to your crashes that we (guru) could never know about. Heat, anti-virus, video card, etc. are possibilities. If you have to start replacing stuff, you might consider a whole new computer if you can swing it. Prices are pretty dang low nowadays.

Or you could just add some memory and get to 2 gigs. If you have an onboard grafics card you have reduced Memory for the rest of the system. XP has been doing some major updates lately and what ran good a year ago is running slow today.

maybe it's not from the devil, maybe it's from the god.
it's probably telling you to stop playing guild wars for over 2 hours and go do your homework or something.

Did you try any of the other suggestions?

Also, post the specs on your machine here so we can make sure it's not a hardware issue. If you don't know there's not much else we can do for you. Other than what's already been suggested.
