I play on the west coast (northen california) and i have the exact same issues other people are reporting. This afternoon was particularly bad, i was lagging even in explorable areas.

is this affecting Prophecies campaign? meaning the tyrian continent too? If it's not, I might go mess around over there while I wait for this issue to fix.

I just tried out the Frost Gate mission in Prophecies, and I had exactly the same troubles I had in Kaineng - which is to say, I find both sides are affected.

I got the update too. Unfortunately, it did not solve anything. I've been Code 58 since Thursday or so and massive lag since last week.

Since I'm Code 58ing, I have reason to suspect that there is a massive problem at the Tier 1 level (judging from the replies on this thread too). I've been to a few other forums, and there are a wide variety of error codes which seem to suggest that a major switch somewhere has gone down.

(I'm in Western Canada by the way.)

The strangest thing is that updating the client has no problems, but everything else does not work (including the GW front page news!).

edit: I just did a DNS flush, and it seems like that it now moved the addresses to *.arenanetworks.com instead of *.plaync.com. Still the same problems, though.

Thought I would go into a bit more details here since people are criss-crossing all the possible lag types. The update definitely fixed the lag due to server overload on ANets part. Not all of the lag people feel is/was due Alter.Net/UUNet problems that were mentioned in OP. Lag due to your computer, and lag due to the NCSoft/ANet servers would happen regardless of the functioning of UUNet.

If your computer is lagging, restarting will often fix it. You can also find an excellent post on how to minimize computer-based lag here:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s....php?t=3007350

If your lag is due to NCSoft/ANet servers, you have to wait on an ANet patch/update for a good resolution. Many people should have felt the lag in Cavalon/HzH/Maatu Keep (etc.) change with the recent update (yay!).

If your lag is due to UUNet (or other very high latency issues due to internet problems), you will more likely experience the extreme frustration of hours of being unable to connect at all. Lag will rarely be your biggest worry, although it may be quite possible. Its impossible to tell how bad this problem is with respect to lag itself since there are so many confounding factors and we have too little information. Your symptom here is more likely constant disconnects from GW. The only way to confirm it is UUNet (or Savvis, or any other ISP) is to use tracert or similar diagnostic tools.

Unfortunately, without using diagnostic tools, distinguishing between the potential causes of lag becomes extremely difficult (I could explain how to do at least rudimentary testing on as much, but don't see how it would matter much [Edit: Nevermind, just refer to previous page, post by Quzul on how to test more for latency, etc., at least for a good enough start on it]).

I'm happy that ANet was able to diagnose at least part of what was causing their side of the lag and minimize that. I have no idea how things are going with UUNet, et al., haven't heard a peep in almost a week (no news is good news?). I have also taken to monitoring keynote.com (as brought up to a previous poster; thank you for that link, I was having problems refinding it) a bit more often and have noticed no problems with UUNet in the last couple days.

And for those who like conspiracy theories, I could come up with some really wacked out ones on the problems between NCSoft and UUNet

Edit in [] above.

Domain Name servers are a translation system, it allows a browser to translate a user friendly address into a real world Number Address behind the scenes. Domain names are effectively pointers to a real home address or secondary domain that again points to a real home address on the internet. By home I mean the servers physical Internet address such as 192.xxx.xxx.xxx (Class C, not an internet address but, an example)

In most cases Highend Webserver and Systems that serve applications have statice IPs. (internet addresses) Though in most cases it is a very bad idea to hard code those addresses into a system or application, as ISPs are subject to change and so are their policies for IP assignment. Most applications, servers, and client side software use Domain names to access online content, which allows for these said Static IPs to change without the need to rewrite an application. If these said IPs were hard coded it would force clients to download and update from alternate locations manually as the static IPs would be unresolveable (Un-translateable).

If the DNS Cache in Windows Xp believes that a site is down or is inaccessible it may very well continue to do so as it may cache the incorrect information or even cache the address as being simply unresolveable. Since Windows typically will first Check its Dns Cache then its Local Host File for an address translation before it goes out to the Default ISP Domain Name servers to locate the correct IP for the Domain in question. If Windows Finds that address which you have requested cached it will go no furthre then its own cache for the translation regardless of if it is correct or not. Flushing your cache removes the entries in the cache forcing Windows to use the ISP assigned default Domain Name Servers to locate the address you have requested, which it can later cache again.

Default Dropped Packets

I have been a having a similar problem except that mine is during the updates. I just bought GW a coupke of weeks ago and have not gotten to play it yet. I tried installing from the disks and when it came time for updates it just hung there switching between downloading and connecting to the server. I have been through 5 or 6 things with tech support and I am getting ready to do the ping plot tonight. I have tried deleting the gw.dat file and starting the download from scratch but it hits 82% complete with 421 files remaing and just keeps switching back and forth. They said a complete download from scratch should take about 1.5 hours with cable. I let it run all night and still did not complete the download. This sounds pretty similar to the problems everyone else is having. I am located in New Mexico.

Anyone else still having trouble with this? Everything seemed to be fine for me after last week's update however the lag and disconnects have started up again in the last four days (I had 3 err7's in 15 minutes today and have given up playing tonight).

I have had three responses from PlayNC support relating to this issue. The first was to send in my location, connection etc which is fair enough at first. The second gave me the net info utility to run which clearly showed 100% packet loss between alter.net and plaync.com however the third response is asking me to connect directly to my modem without going through my router (I seem to be going backwards here?).

Tonight's patch seemed to have switched the route that GW accesses in order to connect. However, it still doesn't work. Hmmph.

I checked the whois information, and it seems like it's out of NCAUSTIN...

Grr. The edit button doesn't work for me.

Anyway, I was wrong; Alter.net is still the backbone.. you can check by tracing the arenanetworks auth connection.

Tons of error 007 and lag since this 1 or 2 week(s). Situtation is getting worst and we can hardly finish any teamed game every night.

OH EM GEE.

This is weird. I'm at school on the T1 network and downloaded the GW client. For some reason, it loads GW just fine! I'm not sure whether it's because of the network or the downloaded client, but I'll find out tonight.

Well, I did some tests at home, and GW works!

However, I don't know why it works. All I know is that I downloaded the client off guildwars.com, let it install and download the files. That got GW to work on my laptop.

On my desktop, I tested the same procedure by deleting the old GW.dat and downloading the client, but I was still blocked. However, I double-checked Peer Guardian and it was blocking some of the addresses. I allowed the addresses and it suddenly worked.

To double check, I recovered the old GW.dat and tried reconnecting with the allowed addresses. It didn't work, surprisingly.

So, here's my conclusion: Try downloading the client off guildwars.com and see if that works for you. I need more data to see what the problem is.

also if you have had it do a data archive repair and it doesnt work right dump it and redo.

i bypass alternet by being next door (almost) to anets main data setup

That's the problem; I did do a repair.

I'm looking at my internet logs right now and it seems like that there's a distinct difference between the destination ports between the downloaded client/reobtained dat and the CD client. With the former, it goes to port 6112. The latter seems to go to port 80.

I'm going to run a few more tests and see what happens...
