When I run Guildwars on my mac in BootCamp, I find that occasionally, Guildwars shuts down spontaneously, due to "errors in memory, possibly caused by overheating" or something to that effect, afterwards being directed to the guild wars support page.

These crashes usually occur within the same windows session, where Guild wars will repeatedly crash, when re-opened without restart.

I was wondering if there was a cause for this, and if there is a way to predictably prevent this from happening.

well, since the message it gives you is "errors in memory, possibly caused by overheating", then that's probably the problem. is your mac a laptop? if so, keep in mind that heat dissipation is not very good on macbooks.

If it is overheating, try turning down the graphics in GW (set AA to x2, if it's at x4, for example) to take some of the load off the GPU (video chip).

I am having the exact same problem! I recently purchased a new aluminum macbook, and I am running windows XP on boot camp. All of my games play beautifully with the exception of guild wars. I have the exact same crash that you do. If anyone could please find a fix for this it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

This is hard to pinpoint the problem, it's likely something hardware or drivers related. I'd like to go with the later. Are your drivers up to date?

I havn't play GW for like 7 months or so but I used to play it on my mac pro as well. And I've never run into such a problem. I havn't update my bootcamp though, so it is still the same vanilla version the came with the machine. I did keep the nvidia driver upto date on the window side however.

So my suggestion would be to update or rollback graphic card driver first and see what happen.

try the latest nvidia driver on your windows side, and buy a laptop stand. you know, the one that elevates the back of the laptop off of the table.

macbooks are pretty and slim. however, the first thing they sacrificed is air circulation. this means they'll overheat on graphic intensive apps like GW. if you can't afford a laptop stand, just get a large book and prop up the back of the laptop with it.

I have tried updating drivers from Nvidia, and I have my macbook on a stand with a fan. So my macbook is not overheating, that's for sure. It would be appreciated if you guys wouldn't mind some more suggestions. Thanks a bunch! Hopefully I can get this darn thing to work...

i'd now try rolling back drivers. if memory serves me correctly, driver version 169.21 works quite well with guild wars. keep in mind you'll likely lose performance in other games with this version.

also, keep in mind that nvidia's mobile chipset have been found with problems in their solder joints. i don't know if the new macbook is affected or not though.

I've noticed this as well but only when I use the touchpad to play.
Never had the issue when playing with a mouse.
just zoom in/out with your touchpad after you started GW, when I do this the game crashes quickly and I will be directed to that support page.

Having come back to this thread after a few weeks(lol), i've noticed that moving the touch pad DOES screw with a whole lot of games(not just guild wars... Its just that i tend to touch pad when i do play guildwars).

After reading that you experienced the same thing, and a bit more experimentation, I'm fairly confident that the Touch Pad is the culprit.

Have you tried just running the game via crossover games?

I find even the 9400m handles gw very well running 1600x1050 fullscreeen res and no heat issues.
