um... click and drag the taskbar back into place? if that doesn't work, right click on the taskbar and deselect "lock the taskbar", then do step 1.

Hmm, well, I'm not sure what you're worried about, but ...

To put the taskbar back at the bottom of the screen, right click and hold on it. (Be sure to click somewhere in the middle, empty region, as you'll get a different set of options if you're clicking over a process icon rather than just a blank part of the taskbar.) Make sure the "Lock the taskbar" option is unchecked. Then left click and hold on it and drag it back to the bottom of the screen. (It'll sort of snap into place.) Once it's back, right click and hold and check the "Lock the taskbar" option so you don't accidentally move it again.

If it's the icons all over the desktop, you can right click and hold on the desktop, away from any icon. There should be an option that says something like "Arrange Icons By >" In there, chose the "Auto arrange" option to be checked. That should keep them all over on the left side in a neat collection.

If it's the image used as your desktop background that's bothering you, then you were probably looking at that image somewhere and accidentally right clicked and set it as your desktop. You can either find an image you'd rather use as background and right click/set as desktop on that one. Or you can right click on the existing desktop, go to properties. There should be a Desktop tab that appears and gives you a list of other images to use as a background.

Hope it helps. Looks like you're using WinXP, so I think I have the commands right.

My compliments on your thread title - I almost never browse this forum, but seeing that on the main page got me to come look.

In my not-so-humble opinion, the Taskbar belongs at the top of the screen, not the bottom. It's far more ergonomic that way.

Look at what happens in applications that are not games. Toolbars, menus, tabs, address bars, search boxes etc etc... are usually close to the top of your screen. So your mouse cursor tends to spend more time near the top of the screen.

So when you want to use the Start button, you have to move the mouse further - from the top of the screen to the bottom... and after clicking Start, you have to move the mouse cursor half way BACK UP the screen again, to where your favourite icons are on the Start menu. What a waste of mouse movement.

If the Taskbar is at the top of the screen, the Start button is more often closer to where your mouse is, and once clicked, your favourite icons are already just below your cursor. The whole Start menu also drops down the same way as any other menu, which is more consistent.

Putting the Task bar at the top is also useful for revealing which companies pay their developers in peanuts ie. the companies using monkeys as developers... because only monkeys would hard-code window positions that assume the taskbar is always at the bottom, and animations that assume the system tray is always bottom-right.

Well, I never said anyone has to keep it anywhere specific. But in the past, when fixing these issues for friends and family, it has always been a case of "omg help! the computer is being weird!!!" and I find they've accidentally moved the taskbar. So then I show them what happened, how to put it back, and how to lock it.

If you like the taskbar elsewhere on the screen, then odds are you wouldn't post on a tech forum asking for help fixing it. If you didn't know it could move, then odds are you were used to it on the bottom of the screen.

Anyway, @ OP, I'm glad it's fixed for you. Although if it really did "fix itself" while you were reading Guru, I'm even shakier on what actually went wrong in the first place, but at least it's no longer painful.

Notes:

1) This has happened before, and I find it greatly upsetting.

2) I accidentally right clicked and dragged or something.

3) It fixed itself.

4) The bottom of the screen is the right place for the taskbar to be, because buttons for programs are at the top.

Make sure and use a relevant thread title in the future please. Posting "plz help halphalphalphalphalphalphalphalp" isn't helpful at all. Usually, that will only make people ignore the thread all together. Please keep this in mind in the future.
