I have run McAfee and found nothing. I have McAfee with all the bells and whistles, and I have it updated. Virus, Malware, Adware, etc. has been scanned and nothing has been found. I posted that in the original info. Although I am aware that various programs scan for various things in various ways, I am not experiencing any problems with any other website or function. I can download videos, text, and pictures with no delays outside of the normal. And as I stated, I have no new software installed and none removed.

I would agree with the OP's opinion that the problem is not IE8-related. I run IE8 and Vista and the site runs just fine for me whether I log in and disable ads, or run with the ads enabled. I had the slow load problems like everyone else that the mods here had to take down the search feature for a while to fix but since that issue was resolved, I have had 0 issues in accessing Guru.

Well, even if it it related to the site, and not IE8, there is still a chance that there is an ad ON guru that is messing with her browser. (a configuration issue, etc)
If you dont want to bother instaling firefox just to use it once, i suggest this:
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
Download, extract to a folder, doubleclick firefox.exe. When you are done with it, firefox will be completely gone. Nothing to install, no files left behind.

As one who in the past has made small problems worse by making irrational changes to my system to solve a problem I say stick with IE.
Its very unlikely to be the cause of the problem.

Could be loads of things cookies javascript activex flash etc all the fun things that make up windows.


Ok I use Firefox and love it but IE is still on the system I can and do use it occasionally but the point is IE may be microsoft but it aint all bad.

In fact apart from firefoxes 3rd party plugins addons extras etc they are pretty similar, mainly because microsoft has been playing catchup and emulating the newer browsers.

Well, the ad I mentioned that showed up about the same time this problem did finally popped up again. I know it isn't the ad appearing that causes the lockup because it has only locked up once when it was showing. However, the ad is for Age of Conan.

I just tried loading guru with my IE 8 and that Age of Conan thingy popped up at the bottom on me too. When you try to load the Guru home page do you see a little broken Icon by your address bar Magma?

If you do that's the compatibility icon I mentioned before. Just click it to make IE 8 more compatible with the guru site. Also you can go to tools in your IE 8 browser and scroll down to compatibility view settings and in there you can either add guru to the list or set it to always Display websites with compatibility view. If you haven't already done so. This fixed my lagging issue with guru and IE 8 runs fine now.

MagmaRed, if I were you, I would go to Tarun's post at the bottom of page 1 and do what he says.

I am going to also point out that you are here asking for help, yet resisting every single suggestion that is given to you to try to track down the problem and fix it.

My guess is you really don't want help fixing it, because you don't believe it could possibly be anything in your computer, it MUST be something here on Guru. If that is the case this should have been posted in the Site Feedback forum, rather than the Tech corner, since that is where you tell us that there is a problem with our site, rather than asking for help with a problem on your computer.

Magma....one other thing you could try it this:

I had a situation where I was getting constant DCOM-related crashes in IE 8 on the Guild Wars Wikia site. How I fixed it was in IE to go to: Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>ResetInternetExplorerSettings. Reset EVERYTHING in IE to defaults and see if that doesn't help. It fixed the problems I was having on the Wikia site. I realize your problem may not be the same as mine was, but doing a full IE settings reset fixed an issue for me. Maybe it will for you as well. It's easy to do and worth a try. Good luck.

MagmaRed, in the way of an update... I've tried the site with IE8 now and can't reproduce the problem. I'll keep an eye out though for other's complaining of the problem but if I can't reproduce it it's difficult for me to know if it is indeed Guru or not.

No, I am not resisting every single suggestion. I am refusing to replace my browser unless someone can tell me that it IS the problem, and that the problem cannot be fixed.

Since Guru is the only website that causes this problem for me, I am assuming that it is related to something used by this site. And since the problem showed up about the same time as a new ad, I am guessing it may be related (but not sure).

I like IE, and am comfortable with it. It does what I need it to, and it does it how I want it done. I don't like change, so the only reason I would replace something that functions well for me is if I had to.

Although it annoys me, I am currently just closing out IE whenever Guru locks up on me. Then I reload it, and try again. If I have more than one window open to use 2 different sites at once, only the Guru window locks up. I am able to switch to the other window and still browse other sites. However, when I close the Guru window down, it closes all open windows.

So if someone can tell me WHY IE is causing a problem, and what that problem is, I'll start to consider another browser. Until then, I'd like to find out what the problem is. I don't like leaving a problem sit and move to a new browser that doesn't have that problem, I want to fix the problem.

Thank you Inde for keeping me updated. Not sure if there is anything that can be done since you can't recreate the problem, and nobody else seems to be having it. I suppose it could be related to Firewall, Antivirus, etc. programs running, and may try to disable them soon to see if it continues with them turned off.

Moddish Note to all - if the OP doesn't want to change browser's, that is their choice and they are free to make that choice. Stop harassing them to make a change they do not want to make. We are here to help, and suggesting trying a different browser is a valid option, but it's their choice if they do and to harp on about it after they clearly state they aren't interested unless it's proven to be a browser issue is not going to help matters. So please stop suggesting it.

Ok, I've just spent around 10 min in IE8 trying to see if I could duplicate the issue the OP is having with no luck. I tried going to different sections from the main page, different forum pages, different threads, going directly to the last post's, opening post's/threads in new tabs and windows.. and not once did I get a freeze up or hang-up. I tried both logged out (ie as a guest) as well as logged in.. and still nothing.

This suggest's that it's not directly relating to IE8 - if it was, more people with IE8 would be complaining about this issue. Which suggest's it's either something in the OP's settings, some other program they are running or a possible Guru issue.

Here's some troubleshooting steps I'd suggest to try regarding this issue. You don't have to do any of the following, but the more you can do.. the better it will be to try and troubleshoot exactly what is causing the issue.

In no particular order:

- Clear IE cache, cookies.

Sometimes the cache or cookies can get corrupted or have "bad" files in them, this can cause issue's with browsing - sometimes effecting all browsing, sometimes only effecting certain sites. By clearing the cache and cookies, this removes this issue.

clloose all IE windows &t abs you have iopen, goto Control Panel and open up Internet Options. On the General tab in the Browsing History section click on "Delete".. and then make sure all box' are ticked and click "Delete". This will completely clear out your cache, cookies and other stuff which can cause issue's.

- Check for "damaged" or bad add-on / Objects installed in IE8

Bad or damaged add-on's or objects can be a cause of issue's if a site (or ad) is trying to use that addon/object.. this can cause crash's, hangup's, graphical error's.. or cause no problems whatsoever.

To check on this: in Browsing History section of Internet Options, click "Settings", and then "View Objects".. then look at the "Status" collumn and see if any state "Damanged" or something other than Installed or Unknown.. and list them here. They might be whats causing the problem, they might not. You could always re-install the add-on if you know what it is and how to re-install it.

If you do re-install it, deleted/remove it first and then re-install it.

- Clear SSL cache & default IE

Sometimes non-default settings in IE can cause issue's and problems, and it can be best to default it back to factory settings as well as clear the SSL cache.

to clear SSL cache: in IO, goto the Content Tab and click "Clear SSL state" button.

to default IE the long way (not a full default, but what I'd advocate doing imo):
A - goto Security tab and make sure the Internet security zone is set to Medium-High.. if not, click the "Default Level" button
B - goto Privacy Tab and make sure thats set to Medium, if not then click "default"
C - goto Connections tab, click "LAN Settings" and ensure none of the box's are ticked (unless of course your ISP requires that you use a proxy server, then that must of course be configured and ticked).
D - goto the Advanced tab and click "Restore Advanced Settings"

- Disable firewall & Anti-virus programs

Sometimes AV & FW software can have updates which change things which can prevent access to programs, web sites, the net, etc. Unfortunately the only way to test whether this is the case is to disable them and then try what your having issue's with.

And yes, I have seen it where AV and/or FW auto-update (or have been manually updated) and suddenyl;u start blocking e-mails access or block web access but can still do e-mails or certain web sites get blocked but not others.

So what I'd suggest is completely turning off whatever anti-virus and firewall software you have - including the windows firewall - and trying Guru then. If the problem goes away, then there is a setting in your AV/FW that is causing issue's with Guru (or the ad's..) and you'll have to take it up with the AV/FW provider.

- Try turning off any other programs you have running in the background if at all possible.

Again, they could be causing issue's with web sites and/or the ad's. (and yes, I have seen it happen.. not very often though).

- Try the compatibility mode

As has been suggested, try setting up and using the compatibility mode in IE8 and having Guru in comp mode and seeing if that resolved the issue for you.

- Try scanning comp with other anti-spyware programs / sites

As you are aware, 1 program does not catch all issue's. And while it might only be effecting 1 site.. there is a possibility of spyware/malware/viruses still there and this is just the start of an escalating issue.

If you don't want to install any new programs on your computer, there are a fair number of online scanners you can use - such as Trend micro's Housecall, Panda-Soft's Active Scane to name 2 off the top of my head (google search online virus scan for more results - most major anti-virus / spyware vendor's has an online scanner that can be used for free.. most won't clean any infections, but if they find something at least you'll know about it).

Otherwise, if your prepaired to try installing programs.. I'd suggest Spybot Search & Destroy, Lavasoft Adaware and whatever programs Tarun's Anti-Malware Toolkit suggest's/installs (I have that installed, can't remember what it installs).

I suggest using a program like CCleaner to clean out the gunk that builds up from internet use (may possibly be a trojan hiding in there) and like above stated, try either spybot search&destroy or AVG free. McAffee is a great program, no doubt, but even if it catches 99% of viruses, 1% will get through.. you might have had one slip through.

More likely, though, it's a compatibility issue. Does anyone know what that type of ad is called (yes i know it's a "popup" type ad, but if you can pinpoint the system running behind it, then do a google search, someone else might've had the same problem).

And keep using IE8 if you are comfortable with it, I use Firefox personally, but if one sight was screwing me up, I wouldn't switch to Opera!

Actually, McAfee has reached the ranks of Norton. It's no good at all anymore, bloated and just doesn't work like it used to. A lot of information about this can be found on avcomparatives. I prefer avast for users because it can run completely silently, including updates. It also has a great detection rate and is free.

As far as McAfee's firewall goes, well. Not so good their either. In fact, McAfee firewall scores far lower than Norton's firewall. -- Matousec

Hmmm...have you ever tried G-Data? I personally, haven't, but it got top marks in the recent PC world antivirus roundup. Then again, i'm sure any commercial print (ie, not free) will be biased just a tiny bit towards the people who pay them the most :P. They don't try some of the more obscure programs, either.

You are correct, McAffee didn't even make that list at all, I forgot that McAfee still has the tumorous data log problem. It just keeps growing.....

Kamatsu, I read through most of your post and will try some of that soon. First I am posting my HijackThis log for Tarun. Not sure what it may or may not tell him, but that was the first option provided. Sadly, it took me a lot of work to keep Guru open enough to get the stuff done, and to post this. Did you clear your cache and cookies? Thats usually step 1 with webpage problems

I understand not wanting to switch browsers, but Firefox is a quick download. You can get it and see if the problem persists. If not, then that narrows it down to IE

Log looks clean. Did the scans (Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, Spybot) return any results?

My usual recommendations:
  • Clean up your system startup with Malwarebytes StartupLite (available in AMT).
  • Personally, I would ditch McAfee (as bloated as Norton anymore, also, be sure to use the McAfee Cleanup in AMT if you do remove McAfee) and pick up avast free antivirus (one of avcomparatives top picks) and get Agnitum Outpost Free (no toolbars, and few other reasons)
  • Drop Adobe PDF Reader for Foxit PDF Reader (lighter, faster, and overall better).
  • Make sure you have the latest Sun Java (JRE u15 as of this post). If you do, be sure to run JavaRa (AMT also has JavaRa available).
  • Disable Ctfmon if you don't need it.

before those measures (uninstalling and new stuff, etc), I'd try shutting down all that stuff you have running at startup and see if it helps. Usually right click on the icon in your tray on the lower right and finding the exit option. If it helps, then one of those programs is the problem.

Yes @ Tarun's recommendation for Foxit. Adobe PDF is bloatware, Foxit is not and you get the same functionality.

Yes @ Tarun's recommendation for a different virus program. Again, more bloatware. I'm savvy enough that I don't even use one anymore but I used to use AVG (http://free.avg.com/). Uninstalling McAfee is sometimes hard, but its worth it. EVERYTHING runs better.
