Default UK Mobile broadband vs monthly usage.

Hi all,

Out of necessity, i am faced with using a dongle which will provide a 3meg speed but only a 3GB monthly allowance of data transfer. So my question is will i be able to surf, check emails and enjoy my GW habit with that allowance?

I am not what i'd classify as a power player but certainly more than just casual. Approx 1-2 hours a day/night after work to unwind is my norm, (when my wife lets me) but i've been known on occasion to pull an 'all nighter' when weekend events are to my liking. (wife permitting ofc)

So does anyone know if i'll be ok with this set-up? In fact does anyone know what amount of data transer is involved on a monthly basis?

Thanks,

Allan

Guild Wars (And most MMO's) use very little in the way of bandwith - You'll use more downloading updates then playing, even if you played almost 24/7.

You should be fine.

Guildwars is like an AOL chat room with the added lines of code telling arenanet where you are in the map to their server. Shouldn't take up much bandwidth, you aren't downloading mass textures and such when you play, thats only in updates. The bulk work is done inside your computer to build the maps.

Also, you let your wife dictate your free time?! Pfft!

Clicking on your network icon should show you how much data transfer you made total since connection. So:

Restart your computer, do some surfing, check emails, and play for 1-2 hours and then check how much total data you uploaded & downloaded (I believe both count towards the 3G limit). Multiply by 31 and see if you get any near the 3Gb limit. If not then you're fine.

I used to use a 3 network mobile dongle to play WoW (I know bad bad bad), I paid for a 3Gb limit & playing on average 4-6 hours / day I never got anywhere near my limit.

So 3Gb will be more than ok to play Guild Wars & general surfing

You, my friend, clearly can't be married..if you are and you play for hours a day, then you are of the lucky few

...or separated

Seriously, though, has anyone here been hit with high charges for going over the download limit? I was thinking of getting mobile broadband for my laptop.

like everyone said, you shouldn't approach your limit, as long as you downloaded your maps before you change or just download from a friend then transfer the dat.

Your pings will be high though, as any long range wireless solution is that way inherently.
